Newbie Turned Fan!
Lynn Cahoon’s Cat Latimer Mystery series, first released in 2016 with A Story to Kill, is set in the small community of Aspen Hills, Colorado. Cat Latimer, English professor turned author, inherited the lovely Victorian house she once lived in from, oddly enough, her not-so-faithful ex-husband who didn’t change his will after their divorce. She doesn’t entirely abandon academia or her writing career for life as an innkeeper, though, so in spite of the awkward memories from her past life there, she turns the bed & breakfast into an author’s retreat. Joining her as manager and chef is her super organized BFF Shauna Clodagh and her high-school boyfriend Seth Howard, with whom old feelings are rekindling, is handyman extraordinaire. However, her skills set is in need of expanding when confronted by few dead bodies requiring investigative intervention. Her Uncle Pete, Chief Edmonds to most, is the local sheriff, so her involvement might be easy...well, not always!

A Field Guide to Homicide earns 5/5 Mining Claims...Engaging Entertainment!
Cat and Seth have returned from a quiet romantic week while Shauna was visiting her brother, but it’s back to work hosting another eclectic group of authors for a writers’ retreat. Revenue is very important with renovations still to finish and a loan to repay, and between them spending leads to strict budgets and minor rebukes. Seth would have complained more about the budget constraints, but he’s been a bit preoccupied with an upcoming platoon reunion with some army buddies. Although he didn’t share his concerns with Cat, she overheard one of his buddies needed to tell him “something.” While on the hiking trip arranged for the guests, a man’s leg is found sticking out of the bushes. Seth is shocked to find the body belongs to a former army buddy, who had disappeared, presumed dead, after a covert mission. Even more shocking is that the man had been living “covertly” on one of the nearby mining claims for the last ten years. What happened on that mission? Or is it all a red herring?

Complex and Compelling! Lynn and her Farm-to-Fork series has always been a favorite, and now Cat Latimer has joined the list. Lynn’s entertaining writing style with description language and expressive dialogue once again has a delightful set of characters. The mystery was very detailed, complex in its scope, and totally engaging revealing several shocking secrets from Seth’s time with his platoon and links to present and past residents of Aspen Hills. This plays havoc with the characters, but all the responses are realistic from disbelief and denial to demanding answers. The investigation, too, is realistic with connections to the past, but there was more than enough background information to keep me in the loop. The most engaging in this sixth book is the many relationships on realistic display. Cat and Seth struggle at times due to the gap of years they were apart, her late ex again enters the picture, and Seth’s feelings then and now are explored. The ins and outs of managing the B&B, retreat, and guests along with Cat’s writing career are also on display...Whew! What a great book!

I know not every cozy mystery lends itself to bonuses like recipes or tips on a theme, but food is a topic at the B&B and authors are all over the pages. Including one or two of Shauna’s treats or some tips on writing short stories or travel logs would have been great. But, it didn’t effect my enjoyment.

Be a Big Lynn Cahoon Fan!
