"The K Team" By David Rosenfelt: Review/Giveaway

Details on how to win a copy of this book at the end of the review and links to purchase it.

Andy Carpenter is a lawyer who prefers not to work. It’s a good thing he can afford to turn down cases, thanks to an inheritance and successful cases in the past. Now when he takes a case, it’s mostly to annoy someone, like that last one. A Paterson, New Jersey, cop, Corey Douglas, decided to retire and wanted his K9 partner, Simon, to retire too. The department said no. This was just the kind of case Andy loves—a chance to annoy the police department, rescue a dog, and beat the prosecutor. He won.

Right before Christmas, Corey and Simon got involved in a case Andy got volunteered for and after finding retirement pretty boring, talked to Andy’s wife, Lorie, also a former cop, about doing this investigating thing as a regular gig, seeing as Andy was reluctant to do a whole lot of work. She and Marcus, he of few words, many muscles, and lots of intimidation, agreed, thus forming The K Team. Dumb name, Corey thinks, but good work.

The team has been invited to visit Judge Henry “Hatchet” Henderson, chief judge. He’s the one who assigns cases to other judges and keeps a few for himself. Henderson is considered to be fair, scrupulous, and honorable, yet someone is trying to blackmail him. Evidence has been planted, the blackmailer has access to information he shouldn’t, and is able to skirt actually committing a crime so far. The threats are merely comments, no demands were made.

With little to go on, the team gets to work, following leads and clues, both real and faked. It’s almost an impossible task. They know something is going to happen, the judge will be asked to do something or risk exposure, and they even know about when it will happen. The what and why are not clear.

Every thread leads to another tangle. Just when you think you know what’s going on, it becomes glaringly apparent, you don’t.

This is a spinoff series of Andy’s cases. He is involved but only from the sidelines as Corey tells the story. With killers on the loose, big money at stake, a plot to make more, a manipulator whose plans make three-dimensional chess look as simple as a child’s game, Corey and the rest of the K Team have their work cut out for them. With a hint of change for Corey’s personal life as well, I can’t wait to read about their next case.

Rosenfelt is a favorite of mine and a shoo in for the Best of 2020 List as he combines suspense, humor, and great lines I wish I’d written myself.

Look for Andy’s next case, Muzzled, available for pre-order, shipping in July 2020. Be warned, this is book twenty-one. They are addictive. After all, there are dogs and mysteries to solve.
