When One Door Closes, Another Opens
The first “closing door” for Calliope Rose Collins was, when she was only four year old, her parents died in a car crash, but the “opening door” was being taken into care by her great aunt who provided her love, security, and a passion for music. She had a successful career as a concert pianist until a tragic accident “closed that door” permanently, but “another door opened” with her being hired as an investigative reporter for her hometown paper Foxtail News which included her own weekly column, Callie Considers. An ancestral curse has caused a “closed door” on Callie’s interest to open her heart to romance, but reuniting with childhood friend and deputy Cass Wylander may just be the creak of an “opening door” causing her to reevaluate her decision to put love aside.

The Secret of Logan Pond earns 5/5 Cold Cases...Engaging Entertainment!
In 1995, six boys skipped school and headed out to Logan Pond for an overnight trip of camping and fishing. However, the next morning, after a late night telling ghost stories, thirteen-year-old Austin Brady was missing. The young boy grew up in the area, so it was unlikely he got lost, and the remaining boys heard nothing, saw nothing, knew nothing. Even with an extensive search, all-points bulletin, and everyone in town on alert, Austin was still nowhere to be found. With the twenty-fifth anniversary of his disappearance impending, revisiting the event may shed new light on the details of the case, shake up a few memories, and maybe reveal a once hidden answer. That is Callie’s hope.

Dex Heatherton, current editor of the Foxtail News and Callie’s boss, was friends with Austin Brady and the five boys and originally set to join the group on the trip, but his father found out the boys were cutting school. Dex, of course, was left at home, so understandably he is very eager for answers. Callie’s success with previous investigations has given Dex the confidence that she just might be able to find something others may have missed. The local librarian is an excellent source with a great deal of information she collected over the years, but one of the boys died a few years after Austin’s disappearance, two left the area, and the two still in the area are reluctant to revisit the event. It seems that Callie has her work cut out for her.

A reporter, like Callie, finds herself juggling several stories exploring aspects of Foxtail Lake and living a very busy life as an involved citizen. Along with uncovering “oh, I think I remember” and “the police found, but nothing came of it” clues, there’s the spaghetti dinner fundraiser, the new Fit and Fabulous Wellness Center, and a “not yet public knowledge” land deal destined to cause disagreement. She also volunteers at the animal shelter, acts as a surrogate sister for the neighbor girl who lost her own mother and lives with an ailing grandmother, and navigates the relationship with her childhood friend in the shadow of a “why tempt fate” curse on the women in her family. Whew! Life for Callie is full, busy, and not without a few roadblocks.

Brilliant! Kathi Daley laid out an excellent cold case grabbing my attention from page one with informal interviews, tireless research, and enlisting many friends and family to lay out the known clues, surprising revelations, and possibly related felonies to uncover the details about the young boy’s disappearance. However, it’s the community, the residents, friends, and family that play the biggest role in this series. The characters are depicted with a realistic pen resembling, by their reactions and motives, people readers might recognize among their friends and family. I enjoy that law enforcement is not circumvented but an integral part of the amateur investigations and the everyday interactions illustrate a close knit small town, but be aware that there are a lot of direct discussions, hearsay, theorizing, and researching; action or personal peril is often relegated to the end when the killer is trying to get away. It is still a great page turner!

Spoilers? Unfortunately, yes. Although the previous murder mysteries are not effected by revealed details, some references are made about a few residents of Foxtail Lake giving away secrets found in a previous book. So newbies might fair better starting from the beginning...It is definitely worth your time!
