Meow and Murder!
Caitlin Hart West, “Cait” as she prefers, has lived on Madrona Island all her life. She is co-owner, along with Tara O’Brian, of a local cafe and bookshop that along with books and a menu of drinks and treats offers a few “fur” friends from the local shelter to cuddle. However, a terrible incident has put the Coffee Cat Books out of commission leaving Cait with lots of extra time on her hands. There is the Madrona Island News she and her husband Cody run to fill up some of the time, but there’s always a mystery somewhere unfolding heralded by the appearance of one of Tansy’s cats. Cait has learned not to ignore these felines, who vary in bred, age, and temperament, because somehow they know just the right direction Cait should take to uncover important clues. Her more two-legged support comes from her husband with all his newspaper resources, her BFF Tara, older sister Siobhan, youngest sister Cassie, her two brothers Aiden and Danny, and of course, Siobhan’s husband and local Deputy Ryan “Finn” Finnegan. For such a small community, it’s all somewhat official, and dubbing themselves the Scooby gang, they brainstorm, theorize, and ask lots of questions. Although they’ve been successful, one or more find themselves in some personal peril. Justice is always served, and the “cats?” always find a forever home.

A Mew Beginning earns 5/5 Old Newspapers...Engaging Fun!
“Who on earth had done this to me?” It seems trouble just won’t take a vacation. Cait finds herself, after interrupting a break-in at the newspaper office, conked on the head. Her rescue, however, is made possible by none other than...a cat; this time it’s white with a dark tail, dark ears, and a dark mask and answers to the name Mystique. Oh dear, Cait’s disturbing feeling of anxiety and foreboding may have been more of an alarm. Although Cody’s files and old newspapers were somewhat disturbed, it seemed nothing was missing. The incident might not have occurred had Cody been at the office, but he was on official police business. Finn and the Seattle PD are working together on a trio of missing person cases, and Cody was asked to help with an informal interview of someone unwilling to talk to the police. Three young women have been reported missing with similarities hard to dismiss as coincidental, and the suspect may have been on Madrona Island. When it becomes imperative that newspapers from decades past require closer scrutiny, they uncover a few cold cases that had sparked the interest of the previous owner of the newspaper. I think Cait’s going to need TWO cats!

Meow-velous! It’s the twentieth book—twentieth!—in Kathi Daley’s Whales and Tails Mystery series, and right off Kathi gets the drama started with a bonk and introduces the newest of Tansy’s cats...I like that! The well-developed story focuses on several cold cases, my favorite investigation, with fascinating details, insights, connections, and a few twists to challenge any Miss Marple—although I did have an inkling about how the story would end. The use of Tansy’s cats is a fun literary device, especially for those “fur” friend fans, but it’s not really magical in a hocus-pocus sense. The cat communicates with persistent “meows” helping to focus Cait on certain details, files, and places, and the rest of the gang understand and accept the importance of the little felines. Along with the investigation that takes the group to other islands and ending with a bit of nail-biting, life continues weaving in efforts to rebuild the café, thoughts of Cait’s mother-in-law’s future visit, discussions about building an intimate cottage, and anticipation of an Easter celebration. These parts add to the realism, provide more well-rounded characters, build connections, and make visiting Madrona Island entertaining. No bonus in this cozy. There are several café, bars, and restaurants to highlight. What about Cait’s favorite fish sandwich? Breaded catch-of-the-day filet with a homemade tarter sauce?
