Farm to Fork to...Murder?
Angie Turner and BFF Felicia Williams have turned a fresh start into a successful restaurant business in a little over a year. The two relocated from San Francisco to Angie’s hometown of River Vista, Idaho, transforming Angie’s late Nona’s farm into a restaurant, The County Seat, a farm-to-table experience taking advantage of all the fresh ingredients local farms have to offer. Unlike the dynamics at her San Francisco restaurant with a constant turnover of employees, here everyone is more like family: partner, pastry chef, and marketing chief Felicia, sous chef Estebe, line chef Matt, culinary student/dishwasher Hope, and behind the bar Jeorge. Angie also is romantically involved with Ian McNeal, manager of the River Vista Farmers’ Market, and despite being Ian’s uncle, she has a few professional run ins with Sheriff Brown. For flavor she’s added to the family her year-old St. Bernard Dom, a white and black hen Mabel, and black goat Precious. Issues with a few pesky murders still seem to plague the group; they are, however, learning techniques to add amateur detective to the menu.

Deep Fried Revenge earns 5/5 Treats on a Stick...Engaging Entertainment!
The Idaho State Fair is in full swing, and Angie is ready to pit her restaurant, The County Seat, against eleven other culinary hopefuls in the State Fair’s Restaurant Wars to select Boise’s Best Restaurant. The rules are simple for the four cooking challenges and themes to follow for each day of the competition and the bottom three being cut. Checking out the venue of individual trailers, Angie and Ian are surprised by a dark figure running out of the tent. Nothing seems obviously stolen, but one contestant’s trailer has been trashed, and Angie is twitching to find out what security discovered. Ian? He just doesn’t want her to find another dead body and ruin their date night.

Angie has prepped her team and supplies well for the appetizer challenge starring corn dogs! However, she noticed that one of the other contestants is the lurker who creeped her out the previous night. He’s extremely confidant, bordering on conceited, about his sole chance to win. When the appetizer winner is announced, he is nowhere to be found...until his trailer is checked and he’s lying on the floor...dead...poisoned. The contest continues to the next round, and the creeper still creeps around making insults and trying to throw, maybe threaten, everyone off their game. When another trailer is trashed and another winning contestant ends up in the hospital, Angie seems to have another one of her feelings...is someone taking out the winners?

And the Winner is...safely Lynn Cahoon’s new Farm-to-Fork Mystery! As a kindred “spud” having been born in Idaho, like my parents, and visiting my grandparents in Boise, I remember heading out to the Idaho State Fair enjoying the rides, the exhibits, the animals, and the food along the midway...sans any murders, of course, unless you count devouring countless quantities of corn dogs. Here Lynn Cahoon brings that experience to life with the sights, sounds, tastes, and murderous peril. Lynn’s well-written drama is a first-person narrative from Angie’s perspective; I enjoy her inner thoughts and theories, as well as a fun, sometimes snarky, sense of humor. However, it is the strong familial manner among the main list of characters that I enjoy with each looking out for the other and engaging in realistic banter. Law enforcement has a close connection, but recognizes the barrier between professional and amateur (well, mostly, details always get out). There is an additional intriguing mystery about a young girl, ironically named Bleak, that Angie and Ian find of interest. Newbies can feel free to start with this book or any of the others. Although characters develop and relationships see ups and downs, there are no spoilers and the mystery du jour is always solved well. Challenge your inner Sherlock!

Bonus! Cozy often means recipes, and Lynn gives readers some insights, “Dear Reader,” into her philosophy on cooking: Homestyle. She also includes her version of the hearty Shepherd’s Pie with some easy shortcuts to save time or a healthy option.

Alert! Releasing in August, book five, Penned In, is the next full-length novel. Angie is hosting a team-building event, and for this quarterly out-of-the-restaurant meeting, they will be visiting the Old Idaho State Penitentiary rumored to be haunted. And, me...I remember this place from childhood summers. Oh, lots of spooky possibilities there!
