Secret Agent Poppy Field is on a mission, one very personal to her. After believing that her father had died years ago, retired Special Forces agent Jack Fields popped into her life to rescue her from a killer only to disappear yet again. Wanting answers – and a reason to forgive him – Poppy has tracked him down to Egypt where she has no contacts and zero ability to speak the language. That’s where her boyfriend Mark Stone (aka, Thor) comes in, providing her with a CIA agent who owes him a favor but is still only as trustworthy as a CIA agent can be.

Poppy doesn’t expect fratboy Ethan Alexander to be much help, especially when he declares that Jack Fields is also Jackson Meadows, a notorious tomb raider and wanted fugitive. That’s not about to stop Poppy, although she faces a far greater obstacle in the form of Dara O’Neill, the Beverly Hills High Mean Girl who made it her mission in life to steal Poppy’s boyfriends and basically make her life miserable. Dara’s famous producer father Sam is in Egypt scouting for a potential movie, but it’s his meeting with a sketchy London banker that interests Poppy’s boss Mr. Brown. Spending time with Dara is not at the top of Poppy’s to-do list, but neither does she want her fake-fiancĂ©-for-the-mission Ethan being lured away by her lifelong nemesis.

After being shot at, witnessing a murder, and nearly being abducted (again), Poppy isn’t sure who to trust or even who is the actual target. The death of Dara’s much-abused assistant, who had the unfortunate coincidence of resembling Poppy, has her, Thor, and Mr. Brown all assuming that she has once again managed to find herself in the middle of an international scheme. Famous for being the daughter of star actress Chariss Carlton, Poppy uses second-hand acting skills and celebrity connections as she flees through the Khan el-Khalili market, meets up with a black-market dealer in Luxor, and is led to a priceless treasure in the Valley of Kings.

Having fallen in love with the romance and intrigue of late 1800s Egypt through the novels by Elizabeth Peters, this fifth in the Poppy Fields series proved to be a genuine delight. The luxurious hotels, chaotic souk where dealers love to bargain, and astounding wonders of the pyramids are tantalizing and compelling, especially when their beauty hides so much danger. Poppy has grown from being a wandering celebutante into a confident, clever agent, outsmarting the CIA agent and never falling for the obvious traps. She is made vulnerable by the abandonment of her father and need for answers, especially since his disappearance led to her being raised by her rather oblivious, self-centered mother. Text chats with her best friend Mia and a soon-to-be engaged mother deliver an abundance of laughs, not to mention the much-needed arrival of her killer Chihuahua Consuela. Once owned by a drug dealer, Consuela is a force unto herself with a protective instinct that should not be underestimated. A thrilling plot, action-packed escapades, and emotional confrontations add to this always entertaining mystery that succeeds in being as funny as it is moving. Poppy’s next mission can’t come soon enough as it crosses international borders into her next exciting adventure.
