In Posadas County, New Mexico, rancher Miles Waddell has used his inherited fortune to build NightZone, an observatory complex that includes a five-star hotel on top of Torrance Mesa. The enterprise has caused a surge in visitors and jobs, resulting in greater prosperity for the whole county. A narrow gauge railroad transports visitors, such as birders, hikers, nature lovers, and stargazers to the mesa's top. But new arrival, speculator Kyle Thompson is causing unease in the county when he buys a huge number of acres and starts development preparations on the north side of NightZone.

Kyle and his wife are being secretive about their plans. The action ramps up when a drive-by shooting at the Posadas Register leaves two people injured among the twenty-five shots. Then the body of Kyle Thompson is found out in the desert and the action escalates. When it is proven to be murder rather than an accident, Sheriff Bob Torrez and Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman have their hands full investigating the case. As the investigation proceeds, the Sheriff's nephew becomes a prime suspect. What was his roll in the drive-by shooting and the murder? How deeply is the nephew and his friends involved? Is the murder related to the new development? Many of the locals considered the land open for hunting and were disregarding the no trespassing signs. Did one of them murder Kyle to keep the land open and free? The tension and suspicions continue to rise right up to the dramatic and surprising conclusion.

I really enjoyed reading this book! The characters leapt off the pages and became real. The written description of the desert scenery made you feel the heat and dryness as if you were right there. The murder is intricately plotted and well thought out. It kept me guessing right to the end. This was a five-star read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well-developed and complex mystery.
