A Pair of Podcasting Sisters!
Everyone seems to have a podcast these days from newscasters to left and right wing pundits, from artists to theologians, from experts to conspiracy theorists. Liv Olsen had worked for the true crime podcast, Cold in America, as a mix-engineer, but her hopes for advancement were dashed with a simple “No.” Determined to prove her “oomph,” she decided, with assistance from her younger step-sister Camry, to create, research, produce, and host her own podcast, Missing or Murdered. Her first show focused on the decades old disappearance of a twenty-something woman brought to her attention by the Santa Maria detective who couldn’t let the cold case go. The “Where’s Amelia Clark? podcast was quite a hit and garnering sponsors and international attention, and despite being snubbed for a Podcast Award, season two “We’re looking into the murder of Brinkley Douglas.”

Up Next, Murder earns 5/5 Mysterious Phone Calls...Intriguing Drama!
I’m not sure Great Aunt Hazel’s idea that using a red onion in one’s cooking is “criminal,” but murder is. For season two of Missing or Murdered, Liv and her “podcasting posse” (step-sister Camry with step-cousin Oliver Lewis, friend/reporter Austin Mallor, and Aunt Hazel feeding the lot) are focusing their attentions on the almost twenty-year-old unsolved murder case of Brinkley Douglas; her skeletal remains had been discovered five months ago piquing public interest. Police investigators at the time only had one person in their sights: the then boyfriend Joel Zander. No body, so no arrest, but nevertheless Joel was essentially run out of town. Although Brinkley’s parents are offering assistance, the police are not, therefore, all evidence is not available. But, their new sponsor affords them the funds to try to gather pertinent materials on their own. It’s not entirely an uphill battle.

Exacerbated by her season one experiences, Liv’s niggling feeling intensifies the thought “something big and bad was about to go down.” Her interviews with Brinkley’s family included a man who just showed up to help when she disappeared, the boyfriend’s lawyer sends a cease and desist letter, his parents aren’t forthcoming, a red sedan keeps popping around, and several “Blocked ID” phone calls have no one on the other end...creepy. It seems a cut and dry situation to accuse, if not arrest, the boyfriend, but delving further reveals some “niggling” doubts that Liv has a hard time discounting. Testing. Testing.

Season Two a Hit! Erin Huss had me hooked after book one, Microphones and Murder, and didn’t disappoint with book two, Up Next, Murder. Her well-developed drama starts with chapters referred to as “Episodes” along with a clever title. Using a first-person narrative from Liv’s perspective, the search for a killer was engaging with plenty of “Maybes” to challenge the reader...is it him or him? Her? What about them? Along with the various avenues of investigation, inconsistencies, personal peril, and a “Wow!” ending, I was so entertained by the cold case details, the ins and outs of producing a podcast (even if inside a closet), and the character connections with newly formed friendships and a sister-like dynamic that seems very realistic (although Camry needs to get a clue that teasing Liv with the nickname she hates is not nice). Erin’s writing style is engaging with a descriptive language narrative along with how Liv uses description for her podcast and various dialogue styles from depicting Austin’s stutter and pointing out when Liv and Oliver are signing due to his hearing disability. I love this series, and am eager for more...season three?
