"The Split" By Sharon Bolton: Review/Giveaway

by Sandra Murphy

Details on how to win a copy of this book at the end of the review and links to purchase it.

Felicity Lloyd is on the run from her ex-husband. She’s managed to hide herself on one of the farthest corners of the earth—South Georgia, Antarctic. She’s a glaciologist studying blue lakes which form every spring from meltwater. After about six months, the ice at the bottom of the lakebed fractures, sending the water through a natural drainage system until it reaches the southern Atlantic ocean where scientists think it helps move glaciers.

Now, there’s one supply boat left for the season. If Freddie isn’t on it, she’ll be safe for months. She checks the incoming passenger manifest but there’s a page missing, and he could be using an alias. There’s nothing to do but wait for the boat and watch through binoculars.

Somehow, he’s found her.

Felicity has a plan. She announces she’s visiting, Bird Island, a remote area to help other scientists with their project and avoids taking her dive partner with her. She had her gear packed, just in case, and is off before the launch from the boat can land. In fact, she’s got another destination in mind, not that there are many inhabitable places to choose from.

Freddie’s clever though. He sees the clues she’s left behind, heard her colleagues confirm Bird Island and knows she’d never leave such a trail. He knows exactly where to find her.

On the incoming boat is a doctor from Cambridge. He’s a psychiatrist and had to clear Felicity for duty in South Georgia. He’s sure she’s been under considerable strain for a long time but refused to discuss it. Now, based on her sessions, he’s willing to travel to the icy world to see her and assure her safety.

To say much more would take away from the tension and suspense of the story. It’s a hold-your-breath page-turner book that will give readers chills, not only for worry about Felicity but for the vivid descriptions of the weather. Freddie’s not the only one looking for Felicity, but the question is what happens when she’s found?

Bolton is the author of eleven other stand-alone books. This is one I couldn’t put down. The ending doesn’t disappoint.
