Meet police lieutenant Ira Segal and his partner, local roller derby star Sgt. Dinah "Dinosaur" Ruisill. Ira is back on semi-active duty after being shot on the job. They are investigating the murder of a man in the River Arts District of Asheville, North Carolina. The victim worked for a local and mysterious start up company, Creatures 2.0, which trains animals to acquire uncanny abilities. The eccentric founder, Elah, of Creatures 2.0 and his super intelligent crow Richard are both missing and can't be found by his family or his biggest client, the Office of Naval Intelligence.

As the murder and disappearance investigation continue, Ira and Dinah meet the strange animals that Elah has trained. A racoon who rolls cigarettes, pigeons who follow a priest to church, and a super intelligent crow named Richard who is capable of any number of things. As the investigation continues Ira and Dinah uncover a mysterious and shadowy paramilitary group and a threat to the president and national security. With the help of Richard the crow, Ira and Dinah go head to head with the paramilitary group who are bent on killing the president who is visiting Asheville. Can they beat the odds against them and the superior numbers to save both themselves and the president? Can Richard the crow come thru to help them?

I really enjoyed reading this suspenseful and exciting tale. The animals were amazing and the action never quits. I highly recommend it for all mystery loving fans. I found the characters of Ira and Dinah to be well written and rounded out while keeping you involved with the story.
