Davis Way Cole is spiraling. Once the lead spy and head of her own security team at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino, Davis now finds herself buried under the minutia of boring (to her) HR duties and following up on Daily Incident Reports. It doesn’t help that her assignment as the double for the Biloxi resort’s owner wife—a job Davis initially very grudgingly accepted–ended after she was unceremoniously fired by Bianca Sanders and replaced by a non-resembling Clone.

With Davis’s CEO husband Bradley off at the Global Gaming Expo in Vegas and leaving control of the Bellissimo in her hands, Davis isn’t about to admit that she might ever need help. That is why the timing couldn’t be worse when five million dollars is inexplicably wired to the Bellissimo, transferred as cash in a duffle bag to the vault, and then…disappears. When a very similar duffle bag is reported in the Lost and Found department by Birdy James, it would seem to solve all of their problems. To Davis’s exasperation, though, the former librarian’s Dewey Decimal cataloging system is as frustrating as the Bird Woman is incapable of staying focused or on topic. Now with the money again missing and Birdy James apparently being held for ransom by Elvis, tracking them all down will be a bit problematic due to the Bellissimo’s hosting of their first Elvis Convention in Biloxi.

A false alarm has Davis’s parents traveling from Alabama to the Bellissimo to care for Davis’s twins, and while welcome it’s the extra baggage they bring that will cause her headaches. Not about to leave her best friend alone or their prized tomato crop behind, Davis’s ex-ex-mother-in-law has tagged along from Alabama with her plants, massive appetite, and ever-present chaos. While the Lost and Found department is missing not just its staff but its most valuable item, very much found is Oliver, a baby who somehow managed to pass through multiple staff daycare shifts until someone finally realized that he wasn’t being picked up. Tracking down the missing money that shouldn’t have been there before the Gaming Commission gets wind of it will be easy compared to pretending to her husband that everything’s fine and that Davis has everything under control.

This ninth in the series showcases the ever-evolving Davis Way, who here seems for the first time a step-behind and nearly overwhelmed with the avalanche of complications. Fortunately, her adorable parents provide unwavering support with practical common sense, although her mother has still never mastered the skill of voice-to-text. There is so much humor and relentless action that readers will be propelled through to the explosive finale. A surprising reunion with Bianca reveals a new facet to the fluttery, trend-seeking, and usually demanding celebutante. Readers will be sympathetic to Davis’s feelings of being overwhelmed while pretending that everything’s fine, as the usually sneaky and manipulative casino spy is for once at a loss. Never fear, though, as with the return of her team Davis once again entertainingly wades through the insanity of the resort casino to bring order, catch a criminal, and wade through the sea of Elvii (plural for Elvises).
