End of the Trail is Marilyn Meredith’s 18th Deputy Tempe Crabtree mystery. In this book, Tempe and her pastor husband Hutch join the search for a missing hiker in the high Sierra. When Tempe finds the body, it quickly turns into a possible murder investigation and she is asked to help.

Tempe quickly finds that the hiker, Gerard Patterson, had a much more complicated life than she was first led to believe and isn’t very well liked. His wife and two close friends, who were at the campsite as well, have a very complicated relationship as the four of them actually live together. She also learns that Gerard had a very apocalyptic view of the future and was obsessed with planning for their survival. As it becomes clear that he was murdered, the investigation begins to heat up and Tempe’s life is even threatened. Throw in a long lost treasure, a ghost, and an encounter with a familiar legend, and things get even more complicated.

I have always enjoyed this series. Marilyn creates interesting and realistic characters and always provides the reader with a good mystery with plenty of twists and turns. Her interactions with her friend Nick Two John, and her continued exploration of her Native American heritage, also add a lot to the stories. While I enjoyed the last book, which took place elsewhere, it was nice being back home in Bear Creek with Tempe for this one. One of the things I love most about this series is Tempe and Hutch’s marriage--despite their different beliefs they work well together and always support each other.

This book presented a really big change in Tempe’s life that I hope we get to explore more of in the future. If you are looking for a quick and enjoyable read with a solid mystery and great characters don’t miss End of the Trail. While the mystery stands on its own, if you haven’t read the previous books, I highly recommend you go back and read them so you can enjoy Tempe’s journey and watch her and Hutch’s relationship grow.
