Trade-Off is the fifth Delilah West mystery by Maxine O’Callaghan. This series was one of the first contemporary mystery series I ever read, and I am enjoying reading them all over again as Brash Books has been re-releasing them. Delilah West was a groundbreaking character as a female PI–coming before Kinsey Millhone, Sharon McCone and V.I. Warshawski.

Delilah is looking for a safe, routine case and hopes that finding missing teen Tamra Wylie will be just that. But when she discovers a corpse in the yard next door and questions whether Tamra’s disappearance may be connected, she realizes it won’t be simple or routine. Was Tamra another victim, a witness, or involved in the murder? Tamra’s father makes things all the more complicated by not giving Delilah all the facts and insisting there is no connection. The more Delilah investigates, the more she is certain there is a connection and that she must be on the right track because someone is working hard to stop her.

Her life is further complicated by the wealthy Erik Lundstrom whom she can’t seem to discourage in his pursuit of her, and by the fact that sometimes she thinks she may just want to let him succeed.

The mystery in Trade-Off keeps you guessing and the characters are great. I love that Delilah is tough and doesn’t give up, and yet she can be vulnerable as well. Great writing, and a fast read. You can enjoy this book without reading the previous ones, but when you are done you will want to go back and read them all!
