In Michael Elias’ You Can Go Home Now, Nina Karim is a hard-boiled detective determined to find the shooter who killed her father. As a child, she saw her father, a doctor in an abortion clinic, shot before her eyes and forever destroyed her family. The shooter was never found, but she is on a mission to find him. Working in law enforcement, she hopes will give her access to the tools needed to track him down. That’s just her after-hours job.

During her work hours as a detective on Long Island, she is trying to solve the case of a dead abusive husband. This leads her on a trail that involves multiple deaths and a domestic violence shelter that protects women on the run from abusive relationships. Does she find more than she bargained for when she goes undercover?

With her quest for revenge, Nina is a fascinating main character, fit to go from book to screen as she is easy to picture. She reminds me of a female version of Robert Parker’s Spencer, just as tough and sarcastic. At times, the book drags due to an overuse of prose and exposition. The dialogue and action scenes really serve to move the story forward and provide easy proof of Elias’ prowess as a screenwriter.

Coming in at only 255 pages, the book is a fast and riveting read. I had to stretch my ability to believe at some clues that include obtaining DNA from a years-old can that someone had saved. That along with some of the coincidences made this a tough stretch for me but still I wanted to see where and how it ended. I would recommend this book to fans of film noir detective stories featuring strong female characters. I would caution that the book does include graphic domestic violence and mention of abortion/planned parenthood.
