Venture capitalist Alex travels to Provincetown to make up with his wife after an argument only to find an empty wine glass, her wedding ring, and some cryptic notes. Alex has no idea where best-selling romance novelist Mina is, and there are no clues to her whereabouts. Married only a short time, he is worried their argument forced her to disappear. As he searches for his wife, Alex realizes just how little he knows about Mina. During his investigation, he discovers a past that Mina had tried to leave behind, including a yet-unpublished psychological manuscript. This leads him asking the question: How much does fiction resemble reality?

The Quiet Girl alternates between Alex’s search for Mina and the story of a teenage girl, Layla, who has difficulty remembering what happened to her. The alternating storylines seem disconnected until the end when everything rushes together. Each chapter builds on the next, unraveling as the story moves forward. My only complaint is that the chapters that detail Alex’s struggles with his fledgling pharmaceutical company seem to slow the story down and are disconnected to the overall storyline.

Filled with twists and turns, The Quiet Girl sizzles to a fast-paced boil. Kosa has an eye for atmospheric detail and for unveiling just the right amount of clues at the right time. While the opening moved a bit slow for me, it paid off with an unexpected ending that I never saw coming. Fans of suspense novels Gone Girl and Girl on the Train will definitely enjoy this one.
