Long Journey to Answers

Twenty-something Ainsley Holloway, originally from Savannah, Georgia, found a diary calling into question the story she was told by the man she called “Dad” and how she came to live with him. She also found an old photography of a young woman and two children sitting on the porch, an image that has haunted her waking and sleeping hours. The questions, curiosities, and feelings she’s unable to ignore along with having inherited a detective nature from the man she knew as her father and a nose for news as an investigative reporter, her search for answers has led her to the Washington coast and a little hamlet called Gooseberry Bay. Hope Masterson, landlord and now friend, rented Ainsley one of the five cottages located out on the peninsula where she has become comfortable and made more delightful friends. She is confident, yet reticent, that her search here will bear answers. The cottage has a perfect view of the house on Piney Point that is directly linked to the photograph and memories long buried are slowly bubbling to the surface. Ainsley is set with her Bernese Mountain dogs Kai and Kallie to tackle whatever destiny or karma have in store for her. But murder? Disappearances? Gooseberry Bay is filled with mysteries and secrets.

Thanksgiving Past earns 5/5 Abandoned Turkeys...Engaging & Compelling!

The Hamish place, a house Ainsley has learned holds a mystery that rivals her own personal one. Parker Peterson has spent five years exploring the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the Hamish family: Mark, Mary, and four girls aged from six to sixteen. Vanished into thin air, it seems, investigators found their personal belongings and family car left behind and their Thanksgiving turkey still untouched on the kitchen counter. Serial killer? Abduction by the mob? By aliens? Theories abound from the possible to the improbable, but nothing was proved and the family was never seen again. The “peninsula gang,” primarily Parker, Jemma, Josie, and Ainsley, are intrigued, and like the previous murder, together they just might figure out what happened to the Hamish family.

Of course, Ainsley has not given up on her own exploration, her own mystery with the house on Piney Point bluff. The Winchester brothers, Archie and Adam, have provided her access, and reaching out to friends of her late father, memories are flooding in. Names? Relations? A badman? Twenty-five years ago she’d been in Gooseberry Bay as a young child. But, how, soon after the last time she’d remembered being at the house, did she find herself in the middle of a burning building, rescued by the man she’d call “Dad,” and raised by him without official channels? Intriguing!

Brilliant! Kathi Daley’s second book in her Cottage on Gooseberry Bay is compelling. Building on book one, Halloween Moon, Ainsley’s personal mystery weaves through the book with a clue here and there revealed, a link to this person and that, and more mysteries piling up. However, it’s the local “cold case” mystery of the missing Hamish family that envelops everyone. I love cold case mysteries and this double version is engaging with rich characters, informative banter, clever details, and several “Wow, I didn’t see that coming!” moments. Kathi’s writing style is entertaining with descriptive language that paints a marvelous setting and characters that easily could be a place you’ve visited and neighbors, family, and friends you know...her realism adds to the enjoyment. Totally love this series!
