Maggie Adopts a Kitten (It Really Happened!)

Maggie was a Scottish terrier who came to live with Marci who had cats! Maggie had seen cats as her littermates chased them over the fence but never got to meet one up close. Punkin, the orange cat, didn’t seem too impressed with Maggie. Dodo, the black cat, scratched Maggie’s nose! It took a long time before Dodo said Maggie’s food bowl could be next to his.  

Marci rescues homeless kitties, those who are born outside where they might get hurt. She trapped a mama cat and all of the babies except one. When the little kitty got hungry, he went into the trap for food and the door slammed shut!

He was very scared. Seeing Punkin and Dodo didn’t help, but he fell in love with Maggie the Scottie dog. The only time they were ever separated was when Maggie went for walks with Marci or went for a haircut.

Maggie and Barney and the Allergic Photographer (It Really Happened) By Marci Kladnik & Illustrations by Stephanie Piro 

Word got around about the Scottie dog who adopted a kitten, now named Barney. Guideposts magazine called Marci and asked if they could write a story about the unlikely pair and send a photographer so their readers could see Maggie and Barney together. 

Marci had four cats and Maggie living with her. The photographer and his assistant came to the house and brought in all their cameras. Then he started sneezing! He usually took pictures of dogs and was okay, but he was allergic to cats. 

Most of the photo shoot was outside so the photographer could breathe okay. In all, he took 2,000 pictures! 

Marci was very proud to know ten million people read Guideposts magazine and would see her Scottie and kitty. Maggie and Barney were glad they got lots of treats for being good. Well, except for the nine Band Aids part when Barney got scared! 

Although the books are for children, adults will enjoy the stories too. Marci continues to rescue feral cats and will write more tales about Maggie and Barney. At the back of each book, Marci explains why to spay/neuter is important, what rescue means, and how shelters operate. There’s a short quiz that follows.
