"The Sea Glass Murders" By Timothy Cole: Review/Giveaway

Review by Terrance McArthur

Details at the end of this post on how to enter to win a copy of the book and a link to purchase it.

It’s 1989. A widowed cop haunted by Vietnam memories, an ambitious television reporter with red hair, a retired, Russian-born CIA agent, a headless, handless, burned corpse, and a piece of sea glass. They all come together in The Sea Glass Murders, an engrossing Gold Coast Mystery by Timothy Cole.

Anthony DeFranco is a small-town cop in a small town that has a shoreline of millionaires—and a dumpster with a mutilated corpse. Tracy Taggart is feisty, which gets DeFranco’s attention, but he wonders if she’s more after advancement than after justice. Dasha Petrov survived Bolsheviks, Nazis, and years with U.S. intelligence agencies, and still keeps an alert eye on the neighborhood, watching more than migrating birds. Also, there are people watching—and doing—other things.

Jurisdiction is taken over, narratives are changed in contradiction of the facts, and DeFranco and Taggart form an uneasy partnership, under the mentorship of the retired spy.

There are nasty things done by nasty people, a lot of unpleasant deaths, autopsies, betrayals, and people who think they deserve to get away with things because they can—and because they know things about people who can make it happen. Of course, on the Gold Coast of Connecticut, even the good guys can have a touch of larceny in their hearts.

It’s a police procedural, a medical mystery, a thriller, and a crafty maniac on the loose. It turns your perspective and distorts your perception, yet it keeps moving towards the truth. Cole’s background in editing “health information products” (whatever that means), marine magazines, and the science/tech end of Popular Mechanics sets him up for a wide range of knowledge. He can describe the workings of the human body with the same level of fascinating detail as firearm use.

The characters have heft and quality. Even the baddies have worth. This book cries out to become a series, and a spinoff for Dasha has been hinted. In the words of Rick Blaine in Casablanca, for the reader, “This may be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
