"Heather and Homicide" By Molly MacRae: Review/Giveaway

 Review by Sandra Murphy

Details at the end of this post on how to enter to win a copy of a previous book in this series Thistles and Thieves, and links to order the new one.

The four women who own Yon Bonnie Books in Inversgail, Scotland, with the attached Cakes and Tales Tearoom, and Bedtime Stories B&B rooms upstairs, are doing well. A while back, Janet was riding her bike and found a dead body. That’s behind her now. Or so she hopes.

Riding before work, she’s stunned to find another body, in the same place and in the same position as the first. Although the body looks like Heather, a true crime writer in town to research a new book, it turns out to be a dummy. Heather herself is sitting on a hill where she can observe Janet’s reaction. Her methods don’t make her any friends, but she doesn’t seem to care.

Heather’s next escapade is to rent a kayak and not return on time. The kayak is found broken in bits on the rocks. A search party is sent to look for her; she’s found high on the cliffside, once again alive and well.

Her luck doesn’t hold out though when Janet finds her truly dead body near standing stones, clutching a miniature silver box Janet’s seen before. It belongs to a mysterious man in town, one no one talks about, and the one Heather was most interested in meeting.

Whether she likes it or not, Janet is connected to Heather’s death and mysterious life. Can she solve the clues before the killer strikes again?

This is book four of the popular series, reviewed here. The four women divided responsibilities so each has their own area and no one else interferes. Even when a murder occurs, they work well together.

Rab and his terrier, Ranger, are favorite side characters as Rab works part-time on his own schedule. Ranger brings his own towel to put on a favorite chair by the fire as he entertains shoppers or snoozes. Ian, the author who lives next door to Janet is full of himself but helpful when it suits. Constable Hobbs appreciates the wealth of information the women can bring him, in exchange for bits he’s able to share.

This is a series I always look forward to—readers will as well.
