Tragedy to Triumph-y
Many would have rolled up in a ball and shut out the world after the tragic death of a spouse and young child, but Abagail Sullivan chose to move cross country, renovate a a beautiful Victorian perched on a cliff, and reinvented herself as an innkeeper. Two years later, the Inn at Holiday Bay is a popular Maine destination, good friends have become her new family, and the local police chief is not only her law enforcement connection with those mysteries she keeps finding, but he’s also snuck into that empty spot into her heart. Beyond the activities and treats at the Inn, courtesy of BFF and chef Georgie, the stories provided by the guests and the interest in mysteries that always seems to become a team effort, Abby continues with a successful writing career and the care and feeding of a trio of delightful, yet demanding, “fur” friends. The Inn at Holiday Bay isn’t all cozy holiday festivities, cliffside vistas, wintery weather, and freshly-baked scones since mysteries of all kinds abound!
Details in the Document earns 4.5/5 Stranded Guests...Engaging Fun!
After resolving the emotional storm of learning about the woman who caused the accident that killed her husband and young child, Abby turns her attentions toward prepping for the hurricane predicted to swing close by Holiday Bay. Abby and her Inn-mates set to board things up and put things away, and with the road closures, the empty Inn filled up to brimming with several unexpected guests: one very pregnant, several underage, and another with a gun! But, it’s after the storm that provides the biggest mystery. An unidentified gunshot victim is found on a nearby beach, and while investigating a large piece of property Abby discovered she owns, a skull, well several skulls are uncovered. Mysteries...what d’ya tell you!
Fab Fourteen! Kathi Daley has done very well to keep and increase her fan base with this The Inn at Holiday Bay series. For those who like a suspicious death turned felonious with their mystery, it is there, but it arrives quite late in the drama when a “gunshot victim” is found with a surprising identity as well as shocking story leading to an “Oh, no!” moment. One victim, however, isn’t enough when a mass burial site is also uncovered with an added search for Who? What? Why? The call about the accident that killed her husband and child, prepping for and living through the Cat 2 hurricane, the suspicious man staying in the attic suite, the first birth at the Inn, a lucrative offer to put up a cell tower on Abby’s property, and everyday events in the lives of Abby and her friends takes up much of the journey. Although it’s realistic that everything in the book doesn’t take place in the presence of or instigated by the main character, as a reader, I’d like more involvement with those “mysteries” even if some details are hidden and meant for me to create my own theories: listening to phone conversations, clandestine meetings, and interviews. Some of the “cozy mystery” is lost. However, I enjoy every time meeting up with Abby enjoying how Kathi Daley has created a well-rounded, strong female character who is a survivor along with her friends, her relationship with Colt, other relationships growing, weddings being planned, and the future painted as bright.
