Karma Resides in Florida!

To escape the physical and emotional fallout of a tabloid scandal, Liz Holt relocated from Manhattan to Melbourne Beach, Florida. She successfully put past abuse behind her with the help of a therapist, her family, and her new beau, Ryan Stone. Normally, she helps her father in his law firm, continues with her writing, and works at the family-owned Indialantic By the Sea Hotel and Emporium, but her dad’s on his honeymoon, she’s in between books, and now, she’s in charge of the whole she-bang, even if temporarily. The hotel seems to be running smoothly, so taking care of her great-aunt Amelia Holt, former actress of 60s television shows, seems her biggest challenge. Creating the Amelia Eden Holt School of Acting gave her aunt the perfect opportunity to relive the “good ol’ days,” share stories of life on the small screen, and impart years of acting wisdom to a new generation, one that doesn’t even know who Barnabas Collins is, and with the added time spent at the Melbourne Beach Theater, it keeps her aunt occupied and out of trouble. However, trouble often comes in other forms: the hotel mascot macaw Barnacle Bob (BB) squawking sixties’ commercials and doesn’t seem interested in the new rescue macaw Carmen MIranda, assistant manager Susannah Shay relying religiously on Amy Vanderbilt’s rules for living, surrogate grandfather Chef “Grand” Pierre Montague with memory issues, and a few suspicious deaths plaguing life “by the sea.” But, as I always say...don’t question Karma’s wisdom!

Buried By the Sea
earns 5/5 Dig Sites...Intriguing and Clever Fun!

Melbourne Beach is a popular site for amateur and professional treasure seekers with its legends of explorers, Native Americans, and shipwrecks, and the group of archeologists staying at the hotel hope to make a history-making find. They hope to prove that Juan Ponce de León, sixteenth-century Spanish conquistador and explorer of fact and legend, did not landed at St. Augustine as many suggest, but further south at Melbourne Beach instead. The Bennett property, adjacent to the hotel’s, is the site of their ambitious dig, but Liz has noticed all is not going well. She witnessed the husband and wife members of the team squabbling, a pair of scientists “almost coming to blows” arguing, hints of jealousies, threats, and bullying, and more than a few #MeToo incidents, and then Birdman, the owner of the Bennett property and Liz’s friend, is very upset the archeologists are disturbing the delicate lagoon habitat and possibly vandalizing his vegetable garden with a Hawaiian sling diving spear. Yet, before the man with the money, the ego, and the hurtful zingers can share the “fruits of his labors,” he is found dead with said Hawaiian diving spear planted in his chest! And Liz’s dear friend, Birdman, may just have means, opportunity, and motive.

Eureka! Kathleen Bridge has added a marvelous fourth mystery in her delightful By the Sea Mystery series with wit and humor as well as history and legends sprinkled midst the conflicts and murder! Kathleen has created intriguing backstories weaving in unique legends, botanical insights, and a plethora of “baby-boomer” references to enrich the traditional cozy murder mystery. She incorporates so many incidents, events, and conversations that not only illustrates the setting and the theme, but also provides insights into the characters and their personalities making this a fun and rewarding series. Liz has moved on from her tragic relationship that physically scarred her, and the relationship in which she finds herself is healthy and endearing, and with one a professional snoop and the other an amateur, it makes for a great partnership. Great-aunt Amelia is over-the-top, but her delightful, flamboyant, no-holds-barred attitude is one we should all wish for in our dotage! Kathleen’s writing uses a third-person narrative filled with descriptive language and witty and informative banter keeping you engaged until the final confession...and more!

Bonus! Kathleen Bridge provides a delicious bonus with seven easy-to-follow recipes that aren't random, but actually are Recipes from Fenton and Charlotte’s Wedding Brunch Celebration: Smoked Salmon Triangles; Pear, Caramelized Onion, and Brie Flatbread; Chef Pierre’s French Toast; Sweet and Spicy Candied Bacon; Roasted Tomato Caprese Salad; Watermelon-Cucumber Salad; Berry Spritzers.

Be a Big Kathleen Bridge Fan!

Kathleen Bridge pens wonderfully entertaining series with strong women in the lead, and always clever, engaging drama. There is my favorite five-book By the Sea Mystery, but my first introduction to her work was with the engaging five-book Hamptons Home and Garden Mystery. She offers something for every cozy taste!
