"All That Fall" By Kris Calvin: Review/Giveaway

Review by Vicki Vass

Part detective novel, part thriller, All That Fall by Kris Calvin starts off slowly but develops into a fast-paced, can’t put down read. Government ethics investigator Emma Lawson takes the day off to help her best friend Kate prepare for the opening of her new preschool.

When the school’s highest profile enrollee, the governor’s granddaughter, is kidnapped along with Kate’s son, Luke, Emma must follow the clues leading to the child’s abduction, two seemingly unrelated murders, and a myriad of secrets. Emma is a highly likable lead character and ably assisted by police detective Alibi Morning Sun.

The first part of the book moves slowly, alternating chapters between seemingly disparate characters and maybe too many of them. It didn’t captivate my attention due to the bouncing around between characters, and it was difficult to keep them straight. It almost led to me putting the book down, which would have been disappointing.

The story picks up pace in the second half when it focuses on Emma, Luke, and Alibi. It is at this point where the action takes over and develops at a break-neck pace with a slightly unpredictable ending.

The author uses her experience as a child advocate for the state of California as background for Emily’s character, and provides details as to the inner workings of the government and its political maneuverings. This provides a convincing background for the story and for Emily’s role as an ethics investigator. Only after reading did I see notes that this is the first book in an intended series with Emily as the lead character. I probably would be interested in reading other books with Emily as she is a strong, smart female.

I would recommend All That Fall for those who love fast-paced thrillers and strong female characters.
