"The Corpse with the Iron Will" By Cathy Ace: Review/Giveaway

While criminology professor and psychologist Cait Morgan has enjoyed whisking around the world consulting on cases with her new-ish husband Bud Anderson, the couple is taking a well-deserved break back home in British Columbia. Their respite doesn’t last long, though, as during a neighborly welfare check-in the former homicide detective Bud discovers that Gordy Krantz has died alone in his home. While the death of the much-liked nonagenarian wasn’t completely unexpected, it sends a ripple of sadness through the neighborhood. What the frequent detecting duo find even more fascinating – and disconcerting – are the codicils Gordy has left in his will. The frugal hoarder seems to have had an abundance of wealth for his prosperous nurseries, and his designated heirs are bound by secrecy, as they must fulfill his wishes in order to gain their inheritances. Cait has been entrusted with delivering Gordy’s eulogy, as well as exposing all of the truths hidden within the life of an admittedly flawed man.

This tenth in the series takes a fascinating, near-armchair level of investigation as Cait and Bud track down the history and secrets of a man they thought they knew. Using her psychology skills to unravel the acts of a very complicated man, Cait discovers long ago crimes and a twist that has both her and Bud completely caught off-guard. Quirky neighbors who are gossipy but mostly well-intentioned add to the charm of their close neighborhood, even as Cait must dig through an intimidating amount of belongings hidden on Gordy’s property. An attempted break-in and then theft adds to the immediacy of the crimes, especially when it’s discovered that Gordy’s death may not have been entirely natural.

Cait, Bud, and their adorable dog Marty are an enviable investigating team. Not only do they fully trust one another, as a couple Cait and Bud balance one another out and bring out the other’s best qualities. Both have had tragic past relationships, but being together has helped to push them out of their comfort zones and into healthier, more communal territories. The humorous banter and genuine love between the pair who lovingly call one another “Husband” and “Wife” elevate this series and make even the darkest moments lighter and full of joy. This is a cozy mystery at its best, delving into the psychology of crime’s victims, perpetrators, and survivors. The confusion delivers an extremely satisfying resolution that successfully serves out justice in a way that is right and just, and not just lawful.
