"Wining and Dying" By Daryl Wood Gerber: Review/Giveaway

Review by Sandra Murphy

Details at the end of this post on how to enter to win either an ebook or print copy of the book and a link to purchase it.

Jenna Hart owns the Cookbook Nook but has the soul of an artist. Her painting is one of seven finalists in the Art and Wine Festival where artists are paired with wineries to show off their works.

One of the other artists is Quade. He showed up in town a couple of years ago, painted murals, and is now working in mixed media. His closest competition is Keller, husband of Katie who is the cook at the Cookbook Nook’s adjoining café. Keller is an easygoing guy but Quade pushes him to the limit.

A death mars the festival. Jenna, on the scene, asks questions for reasons of her own. There are plenty of odd characters to choose from—the stalker guy, a love interest, a competitor, a wayward son, and more. Cinnamon is the police chief, good friend to Jenna, except when Jenna gets what Cinnamon calls too nosy. This time, with a friend in jeopardy, Jenna’s in full investigative mode.

The town of Crystal Cove relies on tourists for income so there are festivals for every occasion. Cinco de Mayo is mentioned as the next. In the midst of all the chaos, Jenna and fiancé Rhett are planning their wedding—if only they can find a venue for the reception.

This is book ten in the popular series. It’s nice to be able to visit favorite characters, hear about new and older cookbooks, and learn about art as well. Pay close attention to the character names. With the artists, festival folks, friends, and family, there are a lot of names to remember. There is a list of regulars from the Cookbook Nook series plus an additional list for new people introduced in this book, handy in front of the book.

At the back of the book are recipes for asparagus-gruyere tart, a gluten-free single crust dough, chicken basil parmesan, chipotle dipping sauce, a savory shrimp appetizer, chocolate mint muffins, and wine cookies, gluten-free or regular recipes for the muffins and cookies. Wine cookies are made with a dry wine and the addition of fennel seeds or anise. Sip wine, eat cookies, and read good books!
