 Who ya gonna call?

Blackthorne, Incorporated has clients all over the world handling security issues, intelligence gathering, private investigations, and undercover operations. The company includes “covert operatives” who are trained with 007 skill and gadgetry and ready for any mission, location, or predicament.

The “911” text from his boss sent Travis Bostwick rushing to the downtown San Francisco office of Blackthorne, Inc. He felt the problems with the last op might have some additional consequences, but walking into the office he sees Emiko Miyake, their top computer geek, red eyed and sniffling, “It’s my sister. Half-sister actually. She’s missing.” Her sister, Chelsea Goldman, had resigned from her teaching position and took off to participate in a project to develop a community center in a small Colorado mountain town. This wasn’t what Emi believed to be a smart decision, as usual, further putting strain on their sibling relationship. On the surface the project looked legit, but when she couldn’t reach her sister, Emi took a more in-depth look at the project and its advertised leader James Williamson. There is no James Williamson and the photos on the website have been copy and pasted from elsewhere. The whole thing seems to be “computer-based fiction.”

Travis, nicknamed “T-Bone,” sees his inclusion in the investigation as “punishment,” but his boss points out company policy about limiting back-to-back undercover operations. So, Uzbekistan is out, and Colorado is in. His manufactured personae as a “wealthy, philanthropic recluse” would give him legitimacy, and adding “eccentric” to the profile would provide some leeway to excuse any unforeseen problems. But like Murphy’s Law: If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong at the worst possible moment!

Trusting Uncertainty Earns 5+/5 Swiss Army Knives…Clever & Suspenseful!

Terry Odell is a favorite author having penned the well-written Mapleton Mystery series,  so I had high hopes for this tenth drama in her Blackthorne, Inc. series. I was NOT disappointed! I am new having not read any of the previous books, and although the actual mission of Blackthorne, Inc. is not clearly defined, it is obvious they are a private security group with a team of trained experts. In this book, a third-person narrative is employed to better present the two storylines running concurrently: delving into a development project and the search for a missing woman along with the missing woman’s ordeal in captivity. This cleverly arranged drama, along with how they converge into one, kept me totally engaged…suspenseful hide and seek, collaboration and intimacy angst, perilous predicaments, loose ends dilemma, and a final nail-biting confrontation. Odell’s descriptive writing style is witty and creative and did well to build the mountainous and deep in the woods setting, intense emotions, and inner thoughts that accentuated sibling rivalries and professional concerns along with dialogue that illustrated tone and personalities. Throw in some will they, should he, or could she queries with a bit of sexual tension. Thrilling…I loved it!

Be a Big Terry Odell fan!

“Romance, with a twist of mystery” Terry Odell is the author of four series offering something for every fan of good writing. Her ten-book Mapleton Mystery series with the three novellas grouped in an eighth book is a favorite. And her other work like this nine-book Blackthorne Inc. and three-book Triple D Ranch are great entertainment, too.
