Stamp It Delivered!

Bernadette Butler has delivered the mail for decades to friends and family in Sugar Creek Gap, Kentucky. For much of that time, she’d been a widow having lost her husband in a tragic automobile accident, but she raised a marvelous son who has provided her with grandchild Clara. Although not without some ups and downs, she opened her heart to Mac Tabor. He had been her late husband’s best friend and, then, became her son’s role model and mentor and someone Bernie could always count on. There’s also a whole town of family and friends: Mom and Dad for Southern roots, the “Front Porch Ladies” for gossip, loyal “fur” friends for company, and a long-time BFF Iris Peabody for the occasional “I’ve got a feeling” revelations. When any suspicious death is discovered, usually by Bernie herself, she uses every bit of her support system to uncover the truth.

Deadly Delivery
Earns 5/5 Package Predicaments…Engaging & Clever!

Bernadette and Mac are getting married, and despite any concern that she’s too old for an engagement party, a bunch of friends and family have shown up to celebrate with balloons, grilling, and champagne. However, enter last minute invite Annabelle Pascal. Mac’s new client plans to build a double lot house and he is the best architect in the biz. Surprisingly, Bernie feels a twinge of jealousy. It’s not improved, when the next day, admittedly with a champagne hangover, she finds Annabelle in Mac’s office acting a bit too saccharine for her tastes. But, she puts her emotions aside and heads off to finish her route. When she reaches Felix Mercer’s house, though, he’s not home. And whether made more frustrating by her hangover or a reluctance to leave the large package on his porch, she chooses to give it to his neighbor Bee Ellis. Bee delivers the package, alright, along with a stern lecture on sobriety. Felix lodges a complaint resulting in Bernie being placed on unpaid administrative leave. Iris has one of her unnerving “feelings” and warns Bernie not to make an apology visit. Told you so…the shouting match and threats will be hard to dismiss when Felix is found murdered.

First Class Fun! Tonya Kappes has penned a delightful tale for her seventh book in this cozy gem: a cleverly devised murder, an attempted murder, and a perilous ending. Real life is always an engaging element in any Kappes’s book, and along with a future wedding, problematic pregnancies, animal hi-jinxes, and jealous triads, several issues are connected to age and competence which I found realistically and sensitively addressed: menopause symptoms, patronizing responses, and missteps and miscommunications. Bernie is a favorite literary friend, and with whom one could easily identify as “a good mom, a smart woman,” and a loyal friend well-like by all. A favorite part a many of Tonya Kappes’s cozies is the easy-to-follow recipes that she includes that are either something her literary cafés, diners, or bakeries serve, like Breakfast Egg Bombs from the Roasted Bean, or something with a bit of southern flair, like Kentucky Oatmeal Jam Cookie. Enjoy!

Preorder Alert! I greatly enjoy this series, and the little cliffhanger at the end of book seven, “…dead,” makes me anxious for book eight, Red Letter Slay, out in late November. Check out the Amazon Preorder HERE.
