"Danger at the Cove" By Hannah Dennison: Review/Giveaway

After being shattered by the death of her beloved husband, Evie and her newly divorced sister Margot left the States for the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago off of the Cornish coast. Raised in the hospitality trade despite their departures into Hollywood productions and life in Soho, they are about to reopen the Tregarrick Rock Hotel once the electrical systems are all up to grade. They are definitely not up-to-par and ready for guests yet, but Margot pleas for them to accept her bestie L.A. friend Louise Vanderhoven as an early arrival. Pulling at Evie’s sympathies are Margot’s declaration that Louise is devastated after the passing of her own husband, a sentiment rather betrayed by Louise being accompanied by the new love-of-her-life. While even Margot raises her eyebrows at her friend’s quick recovery and eagerness to take on another husband as soon as possible, Evie can’t help but be charmed by the handsome finance investor Randall Campbell. Louise is also on a mission to film a movie on Tregarrick Rock, one based on a book that Margot had long sought to turn into a movie herself. While this would fulfill a dream she had formed with her now ex-husband, Margot is not sure if she is willing to see her long-held hopes once again go up in flames.

It’s a tragedy then, that before either the hotel opens or their dreams of a movie can begin that their young handyman goes missing and never returns with Louise’s one lost bag. When events quickly escalate into multiple murders, an injured Louise, and a mysterious ancient shipwreck just off of the coast, Evie and Margo find themselves trapped in yet another stormy, gothic mystery. Delicious English meals, deceptive identities, and a brilliantly dry-witted and wry detective sergeant all lead towards escalating tension and multiple reveals of crimes and greedy criminals.

Having somehow missed the previous entry in this series, I was surprised at how quickly I fell in love with Evie and the Tregarrick Hotel. I probably shouldn’t have, as Hampshire-born Hannah Dennison is also the prolific author of the delightful Honeychurch Hall and Vicky Hill mystery series, both of which are inundated with charming, witty characters. Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Detective Sergeant Patricia Williamson is spectacular, arriving with subtle interrogation methods and an unsubtle ability to narrow in on secrets. Everyone does seem to be hiding something at the Tregarrick Rock Hotel, and while some may suspect a culprit early on the solution is never that simple. The charm of this British Island setting is as alluring as the characters, all of whom are multi-faceted and make it impossible to judge which is the most entertaining. A suspenseful ending that introduces an even more attractive future is sure to have mystery readers eagerly anticipating their next visit to the Isles of Scilly’s Tregarrick Rock Hotel.
