A Shampoo, a Trim, and a Murder!

For two years, Cassie McGlone has been the owner of Cassie’s Comfy Cats, a grooming and boarding destination, in Chadwick, New Jersey, with her trusty assistant sixty-something Sarah Wilcox, retired high-school math teacher. All sorts of furry felines are brought in for a shampoo and trim along with a stay while their owners are otherwise occupied. The newest guest is a “poster child (cat)” for the season. Aptly name Quentin from Dark Shadows fame, the very large Maine Coon cat, who, despite his compliant and docile manner, has coloring, tufted ears, dog like fur, and orange eyes reminiscent of The Thriller mask worn by Michael Jackson. Add the various local activities like a pet parade fundraiser and photo contest for the best non-canine werewolf, an art gallery exhibition, a performance by a cable television psychic, and a week-long marathon of werewolf classics at the local Theater, and it’s the perfect environment for tricking and treating!

Night of the Were-Cat Earns 5/5 Treats & Trials…Clever & Engaging!

A night out with her handsome boyfriend veterinarian Dr. Mark Coccia for a movie and dinner is a treat, especially when the movie is a classic and dinner is Italian, but the phone call about a break in at his clinic was unexpected. The night shift attendant was overtaken by a solo intruder, forced to open the unmarked drugs’ closet, and choked to unconsciousness. The why is obviously drugs. The how is suspiciously an inside job. The who implicates the staff. And when a drug overdose death of a young woman is reported, the police widen their investigation from the clinic to a roadhouse hangout where many unsavory incidents have occurred. An undercover operation might be a good place to start, but who doesn’t look like a cop, lacks a history with the place, or is free to take on the assignment? Cassie! She volunteers with her close friend Dawn for a girl’s night out to check into the place. It turns out to be an interesting evening that leads to police intervention, but it’s like stirring a hornet’s nest…someone’s going to get stung!

Meow-velous! Eileen Watkins’ eighth Cat Groomer Mystery is a cozy Halloween treat with talk of pet costumes, horror movies, and a mention of pumpkin spice coffee putting me in the mood. The mystery showcases the dark side of the small town with vicious thefts, physical assaults, drug dealing, and the innocent and not-so-innocent casualties. Although Cassie and her friends actively get involved in the police investigation or offer insights for its direction, some of the action takes place off the page: interviews, witness sightings, and a deadly traffic accident. The drug ring idea offers a dramatic element and a hidden king or queen pin casts suspicions on many residents and visitors, and although the final reveal was one of a few on my radar, the ending “cliff” hanger was intense. The writing is entertaining and many extraneous doings add to the Halloween excitement. Cassie is a delightful, clever character running a fun business, surrounded by diverse friends, involved in an endearing, healthy relationship, and up for all sorts of pursuits, not all life threatening. Fun treat for any time of the year!
