With brown hair, hazel eyes, and a very nondescript figure to show off mom-like fashion sense Jamie Winters describes herself in rather “blah” terms, especially when in comparison to her sidekick Maizy Emerson whose fit manner, black eyeliner, casual attire, and blue hair always stood out. Together, however, they make a formidable pair despite their energy, styles, diet, and twenty year age difference. They do have a few things in common, though, like Curt Emerson, Jamie’s heartthrob landlord/friend and Maizy’s uncle, Maizy’s quasi-boyfriend/wealthy millionaire Grunthold Grimm, and their personal experiences with murder and mayhem. By day, Jamie “moonlights” as a “first executive assistant” for a reputably-challenged personal injury law firm which has provided some under the radar support for their snooping. But now, Maizy has used her passion to go as far as to create a business, hire an answering service, change her name to “Tee,” and accept an investigating job…“Pipps Investigations, Tee speaking.” |

While at the grocer picking up her essentials, like any sweet treat she can find, Jamie is stopped mid-grab hearing a curious comment in the next aisle. Maizy is also riveted whispering, “…murder?…police?…shady?” One of the women is Heather Baddenlooper and the other is her sister Gillian Hartman whose husband, the late Victor Hartman, was murdered. Dubbed Vicious Vic, he was well-known for his tabloid exposés that gave new meaning to “gutter” press often ruining careers and marriages in the process. It’s hard to contain Maizy’s excitement about another investigation, yet Jamie hasn’t put their last encounter out of her head. When the two ladies appear in their aisle, Maizy’s offer of their investigative assistance is not well received by the widow. The sister, however, knows answers are important for closure and the police seem slow to provide them. With so many injured by Vic’s public revelations as suspects, finding the killer could challenge even Hercule Poirot, but Maizy comes prepared with pat answers, background information, and their credentials Jamie knows are dubious at best. You’re hired!
Brilliant Fun! Kelly Rey’s seventh adventure in her Jamie Winters series is a hit filled with family angst, tabloid turmoil, festering secrets, angry jealousies, and karmic justice. Add an urban legend, cranky lawyers, and personal hygiene gone wrong for an absolutely entertaining read! Jamie is again taken out of her comfort zone with Maizy’s overzealous attitude and snarky methods that often precipitate trouble, but surprisingly, along with Uncle Curt and “G,” they get results. The murder mystery had the quartet of amateurs off visiting spas, hair salons, tabloid headquarters, and cleverly doing a bit of undercover work to get the surprising answers, but their luck runs out and they might not get out alive. Kelly’s writing style is very entertaining with descriptive language, witty banter, humorous predicaments, perilous accidents, and diverse personalities.
