What do you do when given a second chance at life? Rarity Cole is relieved to have “rung the bell” on her cancer diagnosis, but it came with a cost. Her fiancé was not supportive of her time in treatment, lack of energy to do the things he wanted, and as the last straw, the loss of her hair. “Good riddance!” Literally and figuratively the next chapter for Rarity came at the insistence of her best friend Sam Aarons who suggested she move to Sedona, Arizona. That she did and opened a bookstore, appropriately named The Next Chapter.

It’s quite the change from St. Louis, Missouri, and her analyst job with a big corporation, but with Sedona’s slower small town pace, desert air, and her good friend’s new age crystal shop next door, Rarity has the perfect support system. Can she find a way to help others with their “next chapter”? Rarity decides to create a book club, a book club designed for other cancer survivors to gather together, offer support for continued health, and read a few good books. “Welcome to the sisterhood,” Shirley, Holly, Malia, Kim, and Martha!

Earns 5/5 Book Spines…Engaging & Entertaining Gem!

The first meeting of the Survivor’s Book Club was a let down, but Shirley’s lone friendly face did not deter Rarity’s resolve. The two picked out a few book choices, set up a display, and promised to meet again on Tuesday next. The following Tuesday Rarity was pleased that a nice little group showed up eager to join her survivor’s book club. The bonding began over shared experiences, books, and cookies, but Rarity is concerned about the very quiet Kim and Martha’s “I thought we’d be discussing books” attitude. When the next Survivor’s Club gathering comes around, one member is missing. Martha. Rarity thought she might not return being so adamant against sharing her personal experiences with cancer, but had bought the book. After talking with the group members and making a few calls with no results, they decide to take on the search which leads to a devastating discovery.

Happy Reading! Lynn Cahoon’s new series, Survivor’s Book Club, is delightful with this first book sharing a clever, not too complex, mystery with diverse and multi-generational characters, a bookshop, new age talk, a hint of romance, and a dog named “Killer.” The survivor’s/sleuthers’ club is an entertaining and eclectic group of women varied in age and temperament and experience with cancer, but they all had a favorable connection to books during their recovery; books didn’t abandon or divorce them. The victim’s background and surprise connections are slowly revealed, but the local detective isn’t thrilled that the ladies are getting involved. He is handsome, unattached, but not looking for a relationship, however, he keeps running into Rarity hinting to a more personal interaction beyond bonding over “Killer” or the “killer.” “Girl code” issues are raised as to who has a free avenue with McDreamy. Lynn’s writing style is always one I enjoy with descriptive language, clever themes, and characters that are equally strong and flawed. The talk about surviving a potentially life-ending disease is not at the center and those not touched by cancer or someone close who had cancer need not shy away from this book or the series. It is insightful into marvelous characters with an engaging mystery! Another hit!

Preorder Alert! Book two, Secrets in the Stacks, of Lynn Cahoon’s Survivors' Book Club Mystery series is set for a November 1 release and is currently on  AmazonPreorder HERE. “After an ominous Tarot reading, Sedona bookstore owner Rarity Cole must find a killer to keep her friend safe from harm—even if the cards are stacked against her . . .”

First, a big shout out to this fellow spud, Lynn Cahoon! New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Lynn Cahoon pens the delightful Tourist Trap Mystery series including several novellas that highlight a particularly fun holiday or season. Along with the Tourist Trap Mystery, Lynn Cahoon writes two other cozy mystery series: Cat Latimer series set in small town Aspen Hills, Colorado, and my favorite the Farm-to-Fork series set in River Vista, Idaho. All series have engaging mysteries with an entertaining writing style and delightful set of characters.
