Dog's Honest Truth is book 14 in Neil Plakcy’s Golden Retriever Mystery series, but it is the first one that I have read. I was somewhat familiar with the characters and premise thanks to some of the short stories and a first chapter being featured on Mysteryrat’s MazePodcast, so I didn't have any trouble jumping in at this point. I can't wait to go back and read the rest of the series, and this book will definitely be on my favorite reads of 2022 list!

For those unfamiliar with the series, in the first book, In Dog We Trust, the main character, Steve Levitan, has lost everything that matters to him - his marriage, his home, and his career. After finishing a brief prison term for computer hacking, he returns to his hometown of Stewart's Crossing, PA with his tail between his legs. Thanks to a murder, Steve becomes the temporary guardian of his neighbor’s Golden Retriever, Rochester, and his life is never the same! Rochester it seems has a nose for detection.

In Dog’s Honest Truth, Rochester meets the new dog in town, Luke, who is training to be a seeing-eye dog. The dogs bond but there is something off about Luke’s human, Ben Ji. When Ben is shot, Steve helps his friend, police detective Rick, find out what happened and discovers that Ben Ji had a lot of secrets. Steve also has to deal with a student’s plagiarism, a climate activist with dangerous habits, and a rifle-wielding assassin.

I absolutely loved this book! If you enjoy cozies with pets this series should be on your must-read list. The characters are likeable and relatable, the mystery was interesting and filled with twists and turns and a few edge-of-your-seat moments, and Rochester is wonderful! Not only was this a good mystery, but the setting had this cozy, homey feeling to it that provided a perfect escape from the craziness of the real world. I can’t wait to spend more time in this town with these characters! And who doesn’t love a crime-solving dog!
