They call him the Amorous Assailant.

He ties up women.

He kisses them.

He leaves a rose, and he’s gone.

Who is the Amorous Assailant terrorizing Carlsbad, California?

Jade Cavendish doesn’t know. It’s not her case—her client is Gina Rose, naïve heiress, who wants to divorce her husband as soon as Jade can prove he is unfaithful and draining her bank accounts. Never mind that Jade’s father told her to never take a divorce case—this is her first paying case, and she doesn’t want to lose the agency in her first year running it. When she discovers the husband’s secret, and death enters the scene, Jade has her hands more than full in The Case of the Amorous Assailant, the opening mystery of Terry Ambrose’s Beachtown Detective Agency series.

Is it suicide or murder? Is Gina a murderer, or is it...?

...an attack victim?

...his business partner?

...a college buddy?

Jade isn’t in this alone. She gets help (and confusion) from...

...her father, a private detective of many years.

...her mother, who bakes wondrous cookies.

...a blogger, Zoe, who wants to organize a posse of women to hunt down the threat to their confidence.

Jade wades through lies and withheld information in her search for the murderer. And the twists keep coming.

Ambrose’s new series has a darker tone than his Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast mysteries (California coast based) or his McKenna mysteries (set in Hawaii), venturing closer to V. I. Warshawski territory with noire-ish overtones, but less overt violence. The men (except for her dad) tend toward the lecherous; the women (except for her mom) don’t have much of a clue. Jade’s parents (mom and dad) are wise, patient, and let her make mistakes...and help her learn from them.

Jade doesn’t always trust her instincts, since this is her first case, but she can take care of herself...as an ex-boyfriend soon learns in front of his self-defense for women class.

It’s a great first-of-the-series outing for a writer with several solid book lines under his belt. Jade is really as good as gold.
