By no fault of her own, Merry Wrath had to retire from the CIA, so she changed her name, moved back to her Midwestern hometown, and agreed to be Girl Scout leader with her best friend. Seems an easy retirement plan, but the ten precocious preteens turn out harder to wrangle than some international terrorists. Instead of learning cookie selling techniques, they preferred weapons training and learning about enhanced interrogation methods. Their eagerness and surprising adept skill has come in handy when some of the angry Chechens discovered her whereabouts. Happy scouting!

Fishing Badge Murder Earns 5/5 Rods & Rifles … Clever Fun!

Merry is determined to provide fun, learning experiences for the eight year olds in her Girl Scout troop, but fishing brings up some interesting challenges: the least of which is a debate about whether worms have girlfriends and the worst is the prospect of answering questions about where babies come from. But, with the crack of a rifle and discovery of the dead body, Merry’s CIA past is brought dangerously into the open.

Leslie Langtry’s Merry Wrath Mystery series is a fun romp with witty writing, a clever mystery, and quirky characters, and this novella, originally written in 2018, takes all that and adds chases through the woods, an FBI special agent, links to the CIA, accusations, threats, and secrets for which murder is the only response. For fans of the series, this is like a flashback set before Merry marries Rex, before Merry’s past really endangers the troop, and before Betty becomes adept at weapons use. I love the references to Merry’s old life with her signature snarky retorts and another surprise to a fun mystery!

Merry is Marked for Murder when assassin-not-an-assassin and friend Hilly Vinton shows up with an agency-ordered Termination Contract on Merry, but the most disturbing fact is that the contract also went to her real enemies the Russians, Chechens, and Colombian cartels. Is it a prank? Unlikely, when the bad guys start showing up ready for body bags. Lots of questions are raised: Why is she a target of her former employer the CIA? Should she run or stay? And to what lengths will her Girl Scout troop go to help their fearless leader?
