Brackish Water is the fourth book in Neil Plakcy’s Angus Green series and the second book in this series that I have reviewed. The series is set in Florida and features FBI Special Agent Angus Green, who is still fairly new to the FBI.

In this book, Angus is asked to help out a young gay Cuban refugee named
Yulirus Diaz who has been arrested as an illegal immigrant. Diaz was involved in the art world in Cuba and has a great deal of knowledge about the subject. Together with a more senior agent, they use the refugee’s knowledge of the location of an old master painting and the world of art smuggling to try to negotiate his freedom. Things of course don’t go as smoothly as they hope. Angus dives in eagerly, as always, only to find more obstacles and dangers along the way.

Angus is also dealing with a lot of changes in his personal life—having to move out of the home he has been living in for a while because his roommates are moving out, the death of his step-father, a secret his mother has been keeping from him, and taking a big step in his relationship with his boyfriend Lester. Needless to say, Angus has a lot on his plate in this book.

Brackish Water not only provides the reader with an interesting mystery, but also addresses the topic of immigration, complicated family relationships, and relationships in general. Angus is a very likable and true-to-life main character you would love to just have coffee with, and who I look forward to spending more time with in future books. I also look forward to seeing where his relationship with Lester goes from here. Neil is great at creating likable and relatable characters and that as much as anything keeps bringing me back to his books.
