Gemma Halliday Publishing is doing a “limited” release of some of their fun novellas originally part of the “Pushing Up Daisies” collection (now out of print). The next up is the novella Fadedto Death from the Danger Cove Quilting Mystery series by Gin Jones and the fictitious Danger Cove resident Elizabeth Ashby. It is available on Amazon only from April 11 to May 31 for the low price of 99¢ … or better yet, enter to win an eCopy by making a comment below about one of your favorite crafting projects or a gift: (1) quilting, (2) knitting or crocheting, or (3) needlepoint or by entering via email-details and a link to purchase the novella below.

Keely Fairchild was a successful trial lawyer, but she took a chance and started the second chapter in her life’s book as a certified quilt appraiser. Her expertise is well-known among Danger Cove’s quilt enthusiasts, historical societies, and museum curators, so much so that, when there’s an appraiser emergency (Is there such a thing?), she gets the call.

Faded to Death
Earns 5/5 Star Patterns … Clever Cozy Gem!

This morning’s emergency call came from Janet Thompson, owner of Quilt-A-Ganza, a popular event held for the first time in Danger Cove. The original appraiser cancelled at the last minute, so she offered Keely a premium fee for her participation. But, it’s not just for the event itself, there’s been an unfortunate incident of vandalism, and Keely’s services are needed to assess the damages. It’s not the first time her appraiser job entangled her in some criminal activity exacerbating her “syncope” (unexplained fainting), but a destroyed quilt seems a simple task. However, Keely’s local seniors, always ready for some undercover work, dish the dirt on the event which includes poor planning, financial woes, angry exes, and conflicts among the staff. Is it all just your typical gossip? Maybe not now since a dead judge just popped up!

Anytime there’s competition involved in the “cozy” world, conflict (aka murder) seems to follow, and Gin Jones’ novella, Faded to Death, is the perfect illustration of just that. The victim looks to be the best karmic choice with more than one legitimate suspect, and the subsequent investigation is done with reasonable methods including assistance from her journalist/boyfriend adding the realism I enjoy. It’s a well-written mystery with an exciting conclusion including quips that highlight Keely’s background in law as well as her knowledge and experience within the quilting community. Gin Jones presents a strong female lead in Keely who has great instincts; she’s a literary favorite, and her unique medical condition is an engaging element that adds, not detracts from the storyline. Details about quilts, quilting, and quilt appraisals is a fascinating, informative element, too, bringing to mind the quilts I made in my youth.
