Scouts & Spies

Merry Wrath may have wicked “spy” skills, honed as a CIA undercover operative embedded in several terrorist groups, but it’s her life as a Girl Scout leader that has brought her the most joy, the most challenge, the most danger. As a role model, she’s offered her troop educational experiences, team-building activities, and weapons training? They are a resourceful bunch often coming to the rescue when Merry’s past catches up with her. Additional support comes from her husband Detective Rex Ferguson and co-leader and BFF Kelly Albers along with a group of Druid teens, her former CIA handler, a plethora of furry and feathered animals, and Hilly, an “assassin not an assassin.” She’s prepared for anything life throws her way … except for the termination order … sent out by the CIA … worldwide.

Earns 5/5 Official Notices … Clever, Entertaining Fun!

Merry stared in shock at her photo, personal details, and the big red words at the top of the notice, “Terminate, By Any Means Necessary.” What did Merry do to deserve such a final notice? She’s been out of The Agency for years since being outed because of a political tiff between the Vice President and her Senator father, and despite a few disgruntled spies and terrorists invading her life, she’s not in any way a national security risk. To provide Merry extra time to figure this out, Hilly, the “assassin not an assassin,” accepted the assignment, but her Plan A to fake Merry’s death is too problematic. And, when they discover the CIA isn’t confident in Hilly’s resolve, hedging their bets by outsourcing the order to all contractors, it’s clear Merry’s a “marked” woman. But, why a termination order in the first place? They need to find out and get the order rescinded. If they don’t have a Plan B or C or …, Merry just might be selling celestial cookies upstairs.

CIAbsolute Fun! Leslie Langtry always had perilous dilemmas for Merry and her crew to manage, but in this twenty-sixth predicament, it’s “friendly fire” that has Merry in their sights. It’s going to take all her “real” friends and a few former enemies to unravel the details and save Merry’s life. Of course, don’t count out the girls, now sixth graders, with Betty’s ideas a bit outlandish, but it was a clever surprise having some entertaining figures taking on the “termination” contract, even trying to negotiate a better deal to “not” do the deed. The series is always a delight, written well with the entertaining insights into Merry’s past “covert” experiences, her snarky retorts, and plenty of quirky fun with pre-teens, Chechen brothers-in-law, and spies of all sorts, and in this book, a diverse illustration of what makes a friend. The drama maintained an engaging complexity with motives not immediately forthcoming, tragic collateral damage, SUV stalkers, plenty of “Plan As,” and more than one perilous moment to keep me turning the page. There are Scout meetings, snickerdoodles, road trips, too many suspicious characters to count, a few giggles, and some eye rolling, and all I can say is the “Agatha Christie” reveal was a surprise “What?” and “Cool!” I sure wish I’d followed my dream to be The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. This is definitely an exhilarating read!

Preorder Alert! Mythic Melee Murder, the next installment in the trials and tribulations of ex-spy and Girl Scout leader Merry Wrath, is set to release on July 25; it is currently up on AmazonPreorder. Once again an innocent gathering, a Lord of the Rings marathon, has morphed into the entire troop getting involved in a Live Action Role Playing Game event. The troop, now the Skullcrushers, are excited about a weekend of fighting pirates, Mongols, Romans, and Vikings for supremacy! Fun, sure, but it always leads to trouble!
