Frothy, light cozy mysteries are apparently the sweet spot for author Lena Gregory. It’s a major one of mine too, so I’m now wondering why I never heard of this mystery writer before. Gregory has published a couple other series; Grounds for Murder is the second in her Coffee and Cream Café mystery series.

Once you get into this author’s particular rhythm, this is the type of book that flows along. It entices you to keep turning pages with the same gentle pleasure as munching through a packet of M&Ms.

Amateur sleuth Danika Delaney (aka Dani) recently returned to her home town when her life elsewhere fell apart, and her uncle decided to retire from running the beloved local diner. However, Dani has her own plans. She’s going to turn the old-fashioned diner into a bookstore/ice cream café. But here the past intermingles with the present, and even the future. Dani’s high school boyfriend is a major character in the story, allowing for some nice romantic speculation. And Dani’s high school best friend Gwen is at her side, helping to solve the murder along with every one else.

Oh yes, the murder: a big-time mystery writer gives a reading at Dani’s café and is found dead in his hotel room the following morning. Complications ensue involving the writer’s agent, his assistant, and his fan club president (or stalker?) -- all completely devoted to the author. But were they? And what about the possibly two-timing husband of one of the devotees”? Or the guy running around claiming the famous author plagiarized his book?

Throw in a cute, very young tech-savvy nerd, and the plot has enough characters and plot twists to fill out the book in a satisfyingly cozy manner. Plus, there’s a cat!

While traveling the world and writing about wine and spirits, Becky Sue Epstein read cozy mysteries to relax. One day it occurred to her that she could combine the two pursuits. She recently began to write wine-themed cozy mysteries. Hopefully, her agent will love them.
