Michele Drier’s third book in her Stained Glass Mystery series, Resurrection of the Roses, once again features famed stained glass artist Roz Duke, this time in the beautiful setting of France.Roz is hesitant to accept an invitation to speak on stained glass at a medieval crafts conference in Paris, until her friend Liam talks her into using the conference as an excuse to travel around France over the summer. And of course they bring Roz’s rescue greyhound Tut along as well.
Just days before the conference begins, though, Roz stumbles upon the body of a man impaled on a large shard of ruby red stained glass. This discovery puts Roz in the sights of French Surete inspector, Celie Lejeune, who quickly learns of Roz’s history of finding dead bodies.
As a person of interest, Roz can’t leave the country but she and Liam can continue on with their travels around France. Unfortunately, the dead bodies and strange happenings continue to follow Roz, and the inspector is always right behind.
Vivid depictions of France (especially of the countryside) bring the setting to life in this unique mystery. Michele writes the tension in a way that had me feeling anxious as the mystery unfolded and the climax of the mystery is nail-biting. I felt frustrated towards the inspector who kept her cards close to her chest–I wanted to shout at her to take care of Roz!
The addition of Roz’s rescue dog Tut is delightful and watching Roz open herself up to love was a strong addition to the story. Readers should note there is one slightly open-door romantic scene, but it’s easily skimmable if that’s not your cup of tea.
I was fully invested from the opening to the closing of the story. I found the information about stained glass fascinating and that focus made this story feel truly unique in the mystery genre. In the author’s note, Michele mentions the possibility of more Roz stories, and I am in full support!
