Readers looking for adventurous arm-chair travel, should look no further than Mystery in Marseille: A Bite-Sized Art Heist Mystery by Nupur Tustin. Just over 160 pages.Readers join undercover art sleuth Sophie Poisson and her best friend Nicole in the pursuit of a recently stolen, very rare Matisse painting. The two friends get into some eyebrow raising situations, including taking a tour bus around Marseille as they track the thief. There are costumes and wigs and uncomfortable high heels, and I found myself chuckling at some of their antics and situations.
The plot is exciting, and it is certainly clever that the mystery unfolds as the tour around historic Marseille is happening. Seeing the sights while following the twists and turns of the mystery makes for an enjoyable and a little bit wild read. The rich details included about each tour stop brought the setting to life––it really is armchair travel! I often forgot I was home in the Midwest instead of chasing an art thief in France.
The dynamic between Sophie and Nicole is lots of fun. I love great friend pairs in stories, and these two play off each other well. I was glad Uncle Arthur was part of this story. There’s also a lovely surprise at the end that I give two thumbs up to!
A short, page-turning read, perfect to pick up when readers need an escape from the busy in their lives.
