This is the first Christmas holiday Jess Walker is spending back in her hometown in years. She has recently relocated from a big-city Kentucky law practice, and now lives in the owners’ quarters at the B&B she co-owns with her two younger sisters. For her own law practice, Jess sets up shop in an office building that used to be a school. It’s fine, but she is slightly apprehensive about her across-the-hall CPA neighbor whom she has never seen, and the building’s lumberingly aloof handywoman. At least the owner of the building seems cheerful and disarmingly friendly––until she gets murdered one afternoon.Image Source Gemma Halliday Publishing |
But the Christmas carolers are there to help entertain at a party where all the homicide suspects have been invited. Then a Santa Claus shows up who turns out to be one of the suspects. And the holiday decorating is done by a bridezilla type wealthy woman who has paid to spend Christmas Weekend living her fantasy of running a bed-and-breakfast. (Which will never work because … bridezilla attitude.)
Apart from the three sisters who own the B&B and their significant others, pretty much everyone is a suspect. I almost got whiplash from changing my suspicions each time a new clue or red herring was revealed.
Don’t worry, I won’t give anything away. Except for one important fact: this is book #3 in Jones’ Bourbon B&B series, and starting with this book is fine. It is emphatically not necessary to start at the beginning––though you might want to after enjoying this densely-plotted, somewhat cozy mystery.

One day it occurred to her that she could combine the two pursuits. She recently began to write wine-themed cozy mysteries. Hopefully, her agent will love them.
Sounds good to me! tWarner419@aol.com
