"Medal for Murder" By Leslie Langtry: Review/Giveaway

You might be forgiven for thinking that the competition in this book is an actual Murder Olympics, if you have any familiarity with author Leslie Langtry’s series of Merry Wrath mysteries.

If not, all you need to know here is that Merry herself is ex-CIA, and now serves as co-leader (with her BFF) of a troop of exceptional tween-aged Girl Scouts. One 13-year-old scout was elected mayor of the town, while another always “has a guy” to do whatever needs to be done. You get the picture.

During the Olympic-style contest that the scouts have arranged with the next town, there’s a plethora of ways for teams to compete––and to cheat––ranging from swapping (and re-swapping) sugar and salt in the kids’ bake-off, to bringing in ringers like Soviet bloc assassins to compete in the archery contest.

Though Merry does work hard to draw the line at her troop actually “eliminating” people, there’s always a case to be solved in the small midwestern town of Who’s There, Iowa, which is fast becoming the Murder Capitol of the state, much to the chagrin of other nearby small towns. And are the neighboring towns becoming a little too jealous? Is that what happened to the mayor of the competing town?

Never fear, Merry Wrath is on the case. Readers know the criminals will be apprehended, and justice will prevail, because of––or in spite of––Merry’s (out of jurisdiction) police officer husband; her CIA-assassin friend; her gigantic, cutthroat twin brothers-in-law; and, of course, her always-astonishing scout troop.

If you’ve somehow missed Merry’s earlier adventures, you can just climb aboard now (bring a hefty dollop of suspension of disbelief). You won’t regret it.

While traveling the world and writing about wine and spirits, Becky Sue Epstein read cozy mysteries to relax. One day it occurred to her that she could combine the two pursuits. She recently began to write wine-themed cozy mysteries. Hopefully, her agent will love them.
