Fans of Victoria Tait’s mystery series will be delighted to know that while they wait for the newest series (The Treasured Journey Mystery) to begin, they can get their hands on the prequel – Inheritance and Intrigue in the Cotswolds. Readers familiar with Victoria’s Dotty Sayers Mysteries will recognize the star of the new series – Georgina Carey. This prequel also works perfectly as a standalone for those new to Victoria’s work.
Georgina Carey is a renowned antiques expert and is determined to set things right as she sorts through the possessions of her disgraced late husband. She starts by sorting through the valuables her husband kept in a hidden safe. Here she discovers a magnificent and very valuable sapphire ring. She tracks the owners to Marchwood Hall, but when she arrives to return the ring, she finds herself caught between two women, each insisting the ring is rightfully theirs. Georgina calls the police who immediately respond. Soon Georgina realizes that in addition to helping determine the rightful owner of the ring, the police are most interested in a suspicious death that happened on the grounds of Marchwood Hall a few months ago.
For a relatively short read, this prequel was fast-paced and intriguing! I loved getting to know characters that were side characters in previous series and seeing these characters in the spotlight. Georgina was such a real character – experiencing the emotions of loss and betrayal in such a believable way. And yet she certainly didn’t shy away from doing the right thing and investigating mysterious circumstances. I had a tiny guess as to the resolution, but that certainly didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the journey.
As always with Victoria’s work, I found myself once again totally immersed in the setting of the Cotswolds – all the cozy details from the food cooked to the weather outside bring the pages to life. I absolutely cannot wait to follow Georgina in the first book of the series (Antiques and Adversity in the Azores) which is available mid-March.

Sounds like a great prequel. Count me in!
