Dying Eyes Don’t Lie tells the story of Detective Albert Yelsom. In addition to being a police detective, he is also using his position and connections to find his long-lost mother. In the course of his search, he encounters a mysterious vigilante and becomes deeply involved in the kidnapping of the Louisiana governor.
Author Mosley has created some deeply compelling characters. I like them, am invested in them, and care about what happens to them. In addition to Albert Yelsom, my favorites include his partner, Detective Haywood, and Albert’s Auntie Melanie and Uncle Bruce. There is also a parallel set of characters in Los Angeles, Chase Watkins and his buddy Monroe. I also appreciate the deep dive into African American culture and the strong sense of found family and community. Everybody looks out for everybody else. I appreciated Yelsom’s dedication in searching for his mother. Through his search, he encounters some intriguing people, including Mr. Blount, the mailman in his grandmother’s old neighborhood. The story takes the reader from Los Angeles to Chicago to New Orleans, with some surprising revelations.
The synopsis also states that Albert Yelsom has supernatural shamanic powers. These were hinted at in the story. I wish they had been explored and explained in more depth. While the story is self-contained and wraps up nicely at the end, I would be intrigued by a sequel in which Albert has more opportunities to use his powers, with a deeper dive into them.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good detective story with diverse characters, and who likes explorations of different cultures and communities.
