When I saw Murder Strikes a Chord, book one in Heather Weidner’s new Pearly Girls Mystery series, described as Veronica Mars meets The Golden Girls, I knew I had to get my hands on a copy! And I’m so glad I did.
Event planner Cassidy Jamison inherited her late grandmother’s event planning business and property, as well as her grandmother’s four 60-something year old employees and friends. It’s a big job, but Cassidy isn’t afraid of hard work. Cassidy is especially excited that she’d booked a three-weekend musical festival with a chart-topping band. The Pearly Girls are all aflutter about this popular band, full of handsome members.

This was just as much fun to read as I hoped it would be! The premise of a murder at a music festival felt unique. I loved the setting of a somewhat isolated event venue and famous musicians staying on site for a festival. I could easily picture the layout of the space, and loved that Cassidy herself lived on site as well.
The characters are a lot of fun and vividly drawn. Heather captured the band members perfectly, and the Pearly Girls cracked me up. While I maybe would not want to supervise them as a boss, I sure would like to hang out with them. I know it would be a good time. I’m a huge fan of tiny dogs with big names, so Elvis found a spot in my readerly heart right away.
This was a quick read that was both suspenseful and humorous, and I was sorry when it ended. I’m looking forward to reading more from the Pearly Girls Mysteries in the future!
