A Fatal Waltz is book five in Kathleen’s Kalb’s historical mystery series featuring Ella Shane, an opera singer in New York City in the early 1900s.

In this latest addition to the series, Ella is newly married to her duke (Gil), and the couple has returned to New York for Ella’s Metropolitan Opera debut. However, it’s not long before the couple is drawn into not just one, but two mysteries – one around the details of the Prince of Wales visit to New York City way back in 1860. The other mystery involves protecting a friend who is trying to maintain a secret despite the threat of blackmail. Neither of these mysteries are straightforward, and it certainly doesn’t help that those connected to the Prince’s story keep being murdered.

There are two distinct storylines here, but they are woven together carefully, and readers encounter clues and red herrings throughout. There is a final twist that will have readers on the edge of their seats.

The setting of the Gilded Age is brought to life by rich historical details that are tucked in throughout the story. Clearly a lot of research went into this, but I never found myself bored or overwhelmed by the details.

The characters are well developed, and I loved getting to see Ella and Gil now as a newly married couple – they are the perfect match, full of respect and love for each other. No spoilers here but the epilogue was especially fun to read, and I believe fans of the series will agree. The side characters (both friend and foe) are entertaining and each add life to the story.

Fans of historical mysteries should enjoy this series for the mystery, history and delightful characters.
