"A Superior Way to Die" By Linda W. Fitzgerald: Review/Giveaway

Review by J. M. Landon

Details at the end of this post on how to enter to win an ebook copy of the book and a link to purchase it.

This book is set in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, referred to by state residents as the UP, or The Yoop. (Residents are often called Yoopers.) The beaches in UP along the shores of Lake Superior are spectacular. Karin Niemi is originally from UP, and has rented a beachfront cabin, along with her roommate and friend, Bixie Murray. Karin and Bixie are a pair of amateur sleuths who recently assisted a police force in solving a murder. Bixie’s brother, Andrew, is a policeman from another city, without jurisdiction in Munising, and a beautiful man. He saw in the news that Benjamin Roberts, Karin and Bixie’s former boss, was murdered in Munising down the street from where the girls were vacationing. Andrew comes to town with the idea of being a knight in shining armor, swooping in to rescue his sister and her friend because they were involved in a previous investigation that turned into a debacle. (Fitzgerald’s other book Death at the Doorstep.)

At first, I was worried that Karin, the main character, would be a standard, predictable trope that generally applies to Karins of this society. However, Karin Niemi is smart, attractive, and still in mourning for her husband who passed several years ago. Because she is a native Yooper, she has contacts from long ago, including news reporters, bloggers, shop owners, and many other native Yoopers who are willing to help solve the crime. Karin and Bixie soon become suspects because of having worked with Ben Roberts, and because of the proximity of their cabin to Ben’s.

Andrew is in the midst of a divorce, and Karin decides it’s time to stop grieving and get on with her life. The changes in their circumstances, along with daily closeness while Karin shows Andrew the sights, rekindles an “almost” affair that leads to a large amount of sexual tension.
