It never ceases to amaze me how many interesting facts I learn from cozy mysteries. For example, did you know that hairless cats are not truly hairless. They have a super fine, peach fuzz-like fur that covers their body. The Mobile Cat Groomer Mystery series, book three, has two such cats, the Sphinx Sisters, Helga and Eleanor. Helga and Eleanor are a couple of styling Sphinxes, with octogenarian owners who keep them dressed to the nines. Such sweet little mature (it would be rude to call them old) ladies who enjoy a libation or two or a pitcher, couldn’t possibly have killed nail technician Carlotta and left her body sprawled across their adjoining property line for the cats to find.

In addition to the sweet and slightly eccentric Florence and Lottie, this book, this cozy town, is filled with kooky characters. I am pretty sure that there are about 10 people who are keeping everything together, namely Molly Steward, cat groomer and owner of Fabulous Felines, plus her super-supportive friends. If this is your first time reading a Mobile Cat Groomer Mystery, you are in for a treat, and not just because these books are stand-alones in a series, but because they make you smile while also engaging your “little grey cells.”

Whitewater Valley’s postman, Ricky Notts, is one of the more unusual characters and is sometimes good for interesting local gossip, if you have time to listen and don’t mind if he forgets to leave your mail when he takes his leave. Some of those tidbits are about the victim. It turns out there are plenty of suspects since Carlotta was not the nicest of people. She bullied a coworker, got into a cat fight with a librarian, stole a cat, and was in a legal battle with her ex-husband over the house. No one is mourning Carlotta, and at least one person has been seen literally dancing with joy around town.

Molly and her friends––librarian Jillian, photographer Evan, veterinarian boyfriend Hank, fellow pet groomer Veronica, cafe owner Carrie, and Molly’s clever and loyal kitties, Jasper and Percival––keep this story on track. The plot is well done, and the clues are well placed. Like Molly, I questioned the alibis of everyone, whereas Sheriff Lawrence King is ready to lock up Florence and Lottie as the killers because they found the body on their properties. Poor Sheriff King, he has to deal with a cat grooming sleuth, and he is terrified of cats, even the little kitten variety.
