"Cold Burn" By A. J. Landau: Review/Giveaway

Review by Sandra Murphy

Details at the end of this post on how to enter to win a copy of the book and a link to purchase it.

When in Alaska, a geological survey team is caught in an avalanche and discovers a wooly mammoth (live, you read that right),  the crew of a class attack submarine with a new design for being undetectable suffers catastrophic damage, a young scientist is found dead (and his body intact) in the Everglades, it would be hard to think there’s a link between all the events.

You’d be wrong.

Artifacts stolen from tribal museums, a young man attaining warrior chief status, and bodies of fish and humans frozen (from the inside out) no matter the external temperature, call for a team to investigate and discover how the problems can be solved.

National Park Service ISB special agent Michael Walker and FBI special investigator Gina Delgado cross paths as they attempt to untangle the clues that tie the cases together. Michael’s case begins with three years of missing artifacts from the museums in Alaska. The Tlingit (pronounced Klingit) tribe is wary of outsiders based on past history. Michael must gain their trust to determine how the thefts are carried out and why.

He and Gina criss cross paths in their investigations and realize they’re after the same entities but have no idea who or where they are, leading them into dangerous territory.

All their information leads them to a deadly microbe. The problem is, not only are the Russians in search of it, but so is a billionaire with designs of going to Mars—and back. No, it’s not Elon Musk. He failed. This man is determined to succeed.

Being militarily, intellectually, and biologically in danger means trusting the Tlingit old ways to protect them and save the world.

This is the second book in the National Parks series, the first is Leave No Trace. The plot carries readers along from the heat and smell of the Everglades to a bitter ice storm in Alaska. Whoever is behind the plot doesn’t care how many bodies are left in his wake.

Readers will have to pay close attention to names and details. This is a book better read continuously rather than a pick it up, put it down for later tale. Luckily, the fast-paced struggle to save the world will keep the pages turning. I look forward to the next National Parks thriller.
