The M&M twins are taking their sleuthing to the Emerald Isle in this newest Modern Midwife Mystery book. Mary O'Reilly, the patriarch of the family, is taking everyone, including her friends, the Lobby Ladies, to Ireland, the land of her parents and her late husband. Everyone is excited to visit the town of Ballymoor Green, and take in the sights, sounds, and tastes. No one was expecting to take part in a murder investigation. In fact, midwife Maeve (rhymes with cave) was told by her police-officer brother not to get embroiled while across the pond. After not one but two cryptic comments by ladies with second sight, guess who finds a body while trying to enjoy some Irish buttermilk scones on a morning walk

What starts out as an inconvenience becomes a full blown M&M investigation. Just keep in mind that Maeve is a midwife and Meg is a real estate agent; neither are professional investigators. In fact, Maeve is very excited to be able to visit with local midwives and assist in a delivery. Mom, aka Mary O’Reilly, may be a mature lady in a wheelchair who has never met a sequin she didn’t like, but she is still quite a force and has no problem telling her girls to get busy solving the case. Not that the local guardai need the help. There seems to be almost as many suspects as there are townspeople. Deirdre Harrington was a particularly difficult woman who had not lived in town very long and did not seem to have a friend in the world. She had no family to speak of and did not speak well of anyone or anything. She was a thorn in the side of just about everyone. The mystery kept me guessing, while chuckling, and then sighing. It also reinforced my desire to visit Hibernia one day.

The story holds your interest and does a good job of not revealing much until the right moments. I was entertained and educated by the facts found at the top of each chapter. Some of the information is interesting, and other bits are heartbreaking, so be prepared for a plot that is going to pull on your heartstrings. Not to fear though, because there are some great recipes for Irish comfort foods at the conclusion of this stand-alone mystery.
