Murder Under A Mystic Moon is book 14 in the 1930s Mona Moon Historical Cozy Mystery series by Abigail Keam. While part of a series, this latest can be read as a standalone for readers just meeting Mona Moon.
Book 14 begins as Mona Moon and her husband, Robert Farley, Duke of Brynelleth, are on the last leg of their honeymoon. They are island hopping in the sunny Mediterranean Sea and sightseeing all the ancient archaeological ruins. After this part of the trip, they plan to return home to Mooncrest Farm in Kentucky. The couple encounters several interesting characters throughout their travels (more on that later), as well as old friends.

So much great research goes into this series and it once again shows in this latest entry. (Side note: highly recommend reading the detailed author’s notes at the end. It enhances the reading experience!) I found the details around the political unrest in Malta to be particularly interesting. The details of the time period are woven seamlessly into the story so I never felt like I was reading a textbook. And while I wouldn’t necessarily want to visit Malta with murder and unrest around, I enjoyed the descriptions of the area from the safety of my comfy reading chair.
A particularly creative part of this story are the famous characters Mona and Robert encounter. They meet Martha Gellhorn, an American novelist, journalist, and war correspondent of the time, as well as British archaeologist Howard Carter. (Carter discovered the Valley of the Kings tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen). And last, but certainly not least, Agatha Christie makes an appearance.
Fans of the series and readers looking for their next historical mystery won’t be disappointed by this story featuring the down to earth, generous and thoughtful Mona. This is a strong, layered mystery with wonderful characters in a beautiful setting. The ending is a bit of a nail-biter, and I’m looking forward to reading the next entry!
